When Gershwin asked to study with him, Ravel said "It is better to write good Gershwin than bad Ravel." The jazz-influenced Concerto for the Left Hand was written for a pianist grievously injured during the First World War. The dark undertones of La Valse, an homage to Viennese waltz, suggest a furious farewell to gentility in post-war Europe. Concertgebouw Brugge: Concert Hall, Bruges, 8000 Bruges, Belgium Friday 24-May-13 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic: Le Sacre du Printemps At the request of the Concertgebouw, the Venezuelan-Canadian choreographer and dancer José Navas created a personal solo version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. On the list of scandalous concerts, The Rite is joined by Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin. The libretto of the latter disturbed its original audiences with its violence, and the musical setting also made this composition a classic example of expressionism. Nor was scandal absent from Ravel’s La Valse. The work was at the forefront of his feud with Diaghilev, who promptly rejected the work.
