St Martin-in-the-Fields, LondonMozart and Bach Piano Concertos with Nick van Bloss |
|
![]() | ||
| St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, London, United Kingdom Monday 27-May-13 07:30pm Mozart and Bach Piano Concertos with Nick van Bloss Nick van Bloss was born in London and began piano lessons at the age of 11. His musical training began as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and he entered the Royal College of Music at the age of 15 as a Junior, attending full time from the age of 17, studying with Yonty Solomon and winning prizes for his playing. Further studies were with Benjamin Kaplan. In 1987, on hearing him play, the great Russian virtuoso, Tatiana Nikoleyeva, described van Bloss as the ‘finished article of a pianist’.n 1994, aged 26, Nick van Bloss played a televised recital in Poland at the Chopin Festival. This proved to be his last public appearance before he retired from playing completely for 15 years. During these years van Bloss rarely touched a piano, but he did write his autobiographical memoir ‘Busy Body’, which was published, to much acclaim, in 2006. The following year he was the subject of a BBC ‘Horizon’ documentary, inspired by his book, exploring his creativity. This documentary led to interest in his piano playing and, in 2008, he began a series of recordings with award-winning producer Michael Haas, beginning with Bach’s monumental ‘Goldberg’ Variations, and including a recording of Bach’s Keyboard Concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra.
In April 2009, van Bloss made a ‘comeback’ concert at London’s Cadogan Hall, playing a concerto by Bach and Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra. The concert, uniformly reviewed as a ‘Triumph’ by London’s critics, attracted massive media interest from all over the globe.
Since then, van Bloss has performed in the UK and the United States, with the English Chamber Orchestra, and directing concertos from the keyboard. He has also released two universally acclaimed CD recordings (Bach: Goldberg Variations and Bach; Keyboard Concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra) for Nimbus Records as part of a long-term agreement. His third CD, of major works by Chopin, will be released in early 2013. Recent performances include an all Mozart recital at Bunka Kaikan Hall Tokyo as part of a Japan Tour with recitals and concertos, and the coming season will see recitals in Stockholm and in Miami (Miami International Piano Festival), and recitals and concertos in London. A feature film about his life is currently in development. Nick will make his Vienna Musikverein debut on December 10 2013 playing the Mozart D minor Piano Concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Founded by cellist Dietrich Bethge in 1988 from London’s leading musicians, London Octave aims to approach the baroque and classical repertoire in a fresh and vital manner, often without a conductor, but principally for the players’ own enjoyment and the enjoyment of the audience.
Through their regular London season at St Martin-in-the-Fields, the South Bank and on BBC Radio 3, London Octave has attracted a loyal following of concert goers who appreciate their vitality and virtuosity. This, coupled with their programmes based on major and accessible works, has established them as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Britain. The members, many of whom have distinguished individual careers, frequently take turns as soloists and leading musicians are often invited to work with the ensemble. During recent seasons, artists include John Lill, Nick van Bloss, William Bennett, Crispian Steele Perkins, Lorraine McAslan, Yvgeny Sudbin, James Bowman, The Tallis Chamber Choir.
Recently London Octave has taken part in CD recordings with James Bowman (counter-tenor) and given a concert Istanbul’s Is-Sanat Hall with William Bennett (flute).
London Octave’s CD, Better Baroque, featuring well known baroque masterpieces received great acclaim, being described as, “an absolute gem full of sparkle and wit” in Metro. Time Out commented, “Forget the routine baroque, this is better baroque”. Dutton recently released a new CD by London Octave (conductor Kypros Markou) featuring works by the early 20th century American composers A.Foote and V.Herbert.Image credit: white label productions

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 11-Jun-13 08:30pm Desdemona Toni Morrison's response to Othello discusses racism, war and oppression.
Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.

Jazz trumpeter and composer Guy Barker, working with author Robert Ryan, takes the completion of a James ghost story trilogy as his starting point for an ambitious new work. From Ryan’s adaptation of James’ short story The Jolly Corner, which weaves both jazz and echoes of Britten operas into its colourful fabric, Barker creates a new, 70-minute suite for the massive combined forces of jazz and symphony orchestras, taking the audience on a taut and dramatic journey. Co-commissioned by Aldeburgh Music and BBC Radio 3, part of Aldeburgh Music’s Inspired by Britten series. ‘cinematically evocative contemporary jazz’ - The Guardian on Guy Barker and Robert Ryan’s Mozart-inspired collaboration, The Amadeus Project Pre-performance talk Guy Barker, Robert Ryan and Andrew Kurowski Peter Pears Recital Room 6.30pm. | Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Saturday 15-Jun-13 07:30pm Les Arts Florissants / Monteverdi Madrigals Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigals have been described as a ‘theatre of the senses.’ These multi-voiced songs of life and love are intense dramas in miniature; quests for human expression that were as unprecedented as they were influential. In his Fifth book, things changed: the introduction of basso continuo – instruments to provide bass lines and harmonies – liberated Monteverdi’s voices above. This new freedom in the Fifth Book gives wings to Monteverdi’s rapturous visions of beauty and attraction, the sort of intricate, nimble and urgent beauty that Paul Agnew routinely brings from specialist Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants. Tickets £15 - 35.
