| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Tuesday 28-May-13 08:00pm The Art of Jean-Philippe Collard: Part 1 France has given great gifts to the world and one of them is pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. His elegance, his refinement, his pianistic style are legendary and we are proud to be able to offer him in concert over two nights. His chosen repertoire will be French as he touches four of France’s greatest composers: Ravel, Debussy, Fauré and César Franck.
The first evening of his two concert series offers two works by Ravel and one by César Franck. To begin the evening, David Jalbert joins Collard in a performance of the original version of the Mother Goose Suite. Ravel’s String Quartet in F major follows in a presentation by the Cecilia String Quartet and after the intermission, you will hear César Franck’s Piano Quintet featuring Collard and the Cecilia in what has been called a work of ecstasy and unconstrained sensuality.

Dvořák began his enticing concerto while living in New York, but upon returning to Europe, he learned that a woman he’d once loved had died. His youthful song to her permeates this work. Gramophone called Monsieur Capuçon’s recording of it “magical." Kodály’s Dances of Galánta is raucous yet vibrant, and Bartók’s ballet suite in one act features a huge orchestra playing music with dark and totally dramatic undertones.

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 1-Jun-13 06:00pm Everybody loves Tchaikovsky - 4 hour Marathon Once again we celebrate the end of a fabulous Festival that has featured outstanding performances and tremendous audiences. To close out the season we offer you a marathon double concert of Tchaikovsky, the great Russian romantic who gave us some of the most beloved and often-played music in the world, including the 1812 Overture and the fabulous Nutcracker. Tonight we offer something more intimate but equally outstanding, his chamber music.
Tchaikovsky’s music was played at the inauguration of Carnegie Hall and will bring our Festival to an end but not before we hear his first String Quartet, his Piano Trio, his Souvenir de Florence, a very special performance of a transcription for piano of the Scherzo from Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony by teen sensation Conrad Tao and, to close the season, his Serenade for Strings. Many of this season’s artists will be back to take a bow and, with their final notes, offer us a marvelous way to bring the 18th season to a close. Thank you all for making this the best season ever and see you next year! | Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 1-Jun-13 08:00pm Dvořák's Cello Concerto and New World Symphony Thrilling yet moving, powerful yet tender, Dvořák’s New World Symphony is an enormously popular work sure to enthrall listeners young and old. It anchors a program focused on the music of Dvořák, whose works are often a delight of folk color and gypsy flavor. Also on the program is his enticing Cello Concerto, with its elegiac song to a lost love. French cellist Gautier Capuçon, praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for his “eloquent and tonally resplendent playing,” does the honors in the popular and plaintive concerto.

| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Jun-13 07:30pm Chamber Music: Idyllic Elgar Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 no. 1 was written during his early period when he was overflowing with new ideas and eager to infuse his exuberant and bold style into what was the baroque trio sonata. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll in 1870 during what he termed the “happiest year of his life”, and presented three performances of the work as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima on Christmas Day. She wrote ecstatically about her present: “When I woke up I heard a sound, it grew ever louder, I could no longer imagine myself in a dream, music was sounding, and what music”! Similarly, Elgar’s Piano Quintet received equally glowing words from his wife: ”E. writing wonderful new music”. Written in the Elgars’ Sussex cottage where they were seeking an escape from a number of worries in the aftermath of World War 1, passages from Lady Elgar’s diary reveal the apparent programmatic inspiration for the Quintet: “a copse of bare trees, sad and sinister”. | Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 3, Amsterdam, Netherlands Wednesday 5-Jun-13 08:30pm Hildur Guðnadóttir If you happen to come across a cello with a whole array of pedals and other electronic gadgets, chances are the owner is Hildur Guðnadóttir, an Icelandic cello player and singer who has been manifesting herself at the forefront of experimental pop and contemporary music (e.g with the band múm). In her solo work she draws out a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes. At the Bimhuis, Guðnadóttir will play two works on newly developed electric cellos: one utilising feedback and one which is connected to wooden sculptures causing them to vibrate along with the music. The main piece she will be playing is the title work of her latest album Leyfðu ljosinu; a multi-layered, hypnotic sound construction consisting of vocals and cello, which gradually swells to massive proportions.
Tickets €19, students/CJO €15 all categories. Running time 1 hour 30 minutes, no interval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk
