| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. Semi-staged performance in German with English surtitles Sir Andrew Davis, Conductor David Edwards, Stage Director Giselle Allen, Soprano Susan Bullock, Soprano James Rutherford, Bass Katherine Broderick, Soprano Elaine McKrill, Soprano Kimberly Myers, Soprano Jennifer Johnston, Mezzo-soprano Miriam Sharrad, Mezzo-soprano Antonia Sotgiu, Mezzo-soprano Harriet Williams, Mezzo-soprano Julianne Young, Mezzo-soprano Philharmonia Orchestra | ||

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm Peter Grimes in Concert Peter Grimes is an outsider in ‘The Borough’, a
fictionalised version of Aldeburgh that first appeared
in George Crabbe’s poem in 1810. Yet in contrast to
Crabbe’s sadistic fisherman, Britten’s Grimes emerges
as an enigmatic anti-hero. Is he responsible for the
death of his young apprentice? Is he mad, evil or a
misunderstood visionary? Britten’s early masterpiece has captured the
imagination of audiences around the world ever since
its premiere in the aftermath of the second world war.
First written for Peter Pears, the role of Grimes is
sung by Alan Oke, who received huge critical acclaim
for his portrayal of Aschenbach in the 2007
Aldeburgh Festival production of Death in Venice.

| Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 01:30pm The Gospel according to the other Mary John Adams has proven in his past work that he is not one to shun big themes. Famous for being the composer who added depth to the minimal music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass by allowing romantic gestures and modern techniques, he has dealt with political issues such as terrorism, 9/11, the atomic bomb and the Los Angeles riots. Now Adams is taking the challenge to delve into the greatest story of Western history. He created a
modern passion, centring not on Jesus, but on Mary Magdalene. Through her eyes we witness the suffering of the world and the compassion of man. A poignant and captivating modern passion for our current dark times. Los Angeles première 31st May 2012.
Tickets €33, students/CJO €28.80 all categories. Running time 2 hour 35 minutes, one interval. | ||

Musical direction, baritone, theorbo and harp: Nicolas Achten The year is 1600 and there is no place for listening to the most magnificent music like St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. And there is no teacher of such music like Giovanni Gabrieli. That is why princes decided to send their most gifted musicians to study at the lagoon. When Heinrich Schütz arrived in 1609, the young Danish composer Mogens Pedersøn had just started the journey home. Both men would make their teacher proud. Schütz becomes famous far beyond Dresden where he works and spends a few happy years removed from the hardship of the Thirts Years’ War as director of music in Copenhagen. Pedersøn is the first Danish musician to be appointed vice conductor at the Danish Court – his music is worth being discovered.

| Nikolaisaal, Potsdam, Wilhelm-Staab-Straße 10-11, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm Anne Sofie von Otter Ever since the "Swedish nightingale" Jenny Lind captured the hearts of audiences in the period of Chopin and Mendelssohn, extraordinary Scandinavian singers have time and again taken the international stages by storm including legendary Wagner singers such as Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, lyrical tenor Nicolai Gedda or Jussi Björling, "the Swedish Caruso" who Mankell’s opera-loving detective Wallander named his dog after. Anne Sofie von Otter is, in the best possible sense of the word, a modern representative of her art. Critics rightly rave about "one of the most flexible and most natural vocal instruments" among great contemporary voices. Von Otter, Forsberg and Kuusisto create an evening of Scandinavian Lieder-art and chamber music with the piano for once being more than the accompanying instrument and a violin that truly sings enchantingly. Scandinavian teamwork!

| Château de Versailles: Royal Opera House, Paris, Place d’Armes, Entrance at the Gate of Honour, 78000 Paris, France Sunday 16-Jun-13 08:00pm Cecilia Bartoli - Mission: Liaisons Dangereuses It’s the secret history of an unknown composer....In June 2012, between two sumptuous recitals in Versailles (Handel, and Sacrificium) from which the audience emerged enthusiastic and fascinated by the Diva, Cecilia Bartoli mysteriously filmed in the Palace and the park over five days and nights a series of sumptuous airs from the repertoire of opera and sacred music in the company of Diego Fasolis and his extraordinary Barocchisti. Exceptional performances and dizzying feats of interpretation resounded in the Hall of Mirrors thanks to the magic of Cecilia Bartoli… And a shadow made its presence felt there: that of the composer of these magnificent arias, unknown to the general public and whose name had been kept secret even from the musicians who played the scores! This intriguing and splendid project will soon be revealed by Cecilia Bartoli in Versailles after an international tour and the broadcasting of images for the celebrations. Return to the Palace of the team that dreamed up this project, with their principal mission to bowl the audience over and reach its heart, as it always does, but this time after Vivaldi and Handel, by producing a thrilling experience worthy of the celebrated Liaisons Dangereuses!
