| Orford Church, Orford IP12 2LU, United Kingdom Wednesday 19-Jun-13 07:00pm The Church Parables: The Burning Fiery Furnace and The Prodigal Son Like Curlew River, Britten’s two subsequent Church Parables were both written for Orford Church and were premiered in the Aldeburgh Festivals of 1966
and 1968 respectively. They develop the pioneering ideas of Curlew River – the minimal instrumental and vocal forces and the inclusion of plainchant – but
have very different moods. With The Burning Fiery Furnace, Britten’s aimed to create ‘something much less sombre, an altogether gayer affair’, based on the Old Testament story of Nebuchadnezzar and the three Israelites.
Meanwhile The Prodigal Son was inspired by Rembrandt’s painting The Return of the Prodigal, which Britten had seen two years earlier on a trip to Leningrad. Mahogany’s production takes the principal established in Curlew River of merging East with West and extends it to the two later works, first contrasting Balinese dance drama with stained glass and then Middle Eastern Sufism with the art of Rembrandt and Bosch. Orford Church 7pm (The Burning Fiery Furnace 7–8.15pm; The Prodigal Son 9.30–10.45pm) Tickets are limited to two per booker

These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. | Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 03:00pm Dowland Songs and Dances Plus Galliards, Pavans, Almands and other instrumental music. Born 450 years ago this year, the great English Renaissance composer John Dowland continues to inspire performers and composers with the expressive intensity of his songs, providing the foundations for some of Britten’s most haunting instrumental works. Yet Dowland’s own music is not all darkly coloured: alongside some of his most famous and melancholy songs, a stellar collective of outstanding Dowland interpreters perform less well-known pieces which find him adapting the dance forms of the day in exquisitely decorated music that is by turns sprightly and stately.

| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 20-Jun-13 04:30pm The Power of Music You’ll be awed by the raw fervor of these pieces. Though intimate in the size of its performing forces, chamber music is every bit as commanding an emotional as the great orchestral masterworks. Brahms’ Sonata for Cello and Piano is expressive, intense, and forceful. The cello sings in this incredible work of genius. Baroque music is more known for complicated melodies than the more emotional Romantic Era. However, Telemann shows us that Baroque music can be as poignant and expressive. The Baal Shem Suite is a distinctly personal piece and an ode to the composer’s Jewish background. | ||

| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 07:30pm Flowers and Fables Sibelius took the classical symphony and charged it with the freshness and energy of nature itself. Lutoslawski, meanwhile, launched brilliant musical fireworks into the grey skies of postwar Poland. Edward Gardner loves them both, and he begins and ends this concert with two of the twentieth century’s most original – and inspiring – symphonies. In between, something magical happens, as soprano Lucy Crowe re-tells Sibelius’s primal northern myth - and proves that Lutoslawski’s enchanted nursery rhymes aren’t just for children. (£10-£42) | ||
