Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus) Saraste's farewell as chief conductor |
|
![]() | ||
| Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus), Oslo 0250, Norway Saturday 25-May-13 03:00pm Saraste's farewell as chief conductor This is by no means a farewell concert as Saraste will be returning as guest conductor already in the 2013–2014 season. At the same time, these concerts mark the end of a seven-year engagement with us in Oslo as well as an extremely important chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history. It will be next to impossible to leave the concert hall unmoved when the final chorus of Mahler’s’ symphony no. 2 finishes with “Bereite dich zu leben”. | ||

The CBSO gave its world premiere: this music is in their blood, and every performance is special to them. Be there as Andris Nelsons and an international team of soloists bring this deeply personal masterpiece to Symphony Hall before taking the work on tour. (£10-£55)

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-May-13 07:30pm International Piano Series: Steven Osborne An opportunity to hear Steven Osborne's critically acclaimed performance of Messiaen's passionately spiritual meditations Vingt Regards sur L'enfant Jesus. Osborne's recording of this great piano work for Hyperion earned an ecstatic reception, with critics celebrating its 'towering authority and technical achievement' (Gramophone), as well as described it as 'outstanding' (The Independent) and 'awe-inspiring' (The Sunday Times). A brilliant summation of Messiaen's mystical and highly-influential compositional style, Vingt Regards sur L'enfant Jesus is a cycle of 20 pieces reflecting the ecstatic and radiant nature of the composer's own profound faith. The work makes immense technical demands upon its performer, who must create on the piano sonorities resembling an organ or a full orchestra, and whose intellectual grasp of Messiaen's mathematical rhythms must be as secure as his speed, accuracy and versatility. 'Osborne's revelatory performance is a blinding tour de force of interpretive and pianistic incandescence.' (Classic FM Magazine). | ||

The Orlando Consort’s programme of music from 1250 to 1550 features beautiful religious works and lively secular pieces that document all aspects of food, including feasting, shopping, recipes and table manners. Their culinary journey takes them from medieval France to early renaissance Italy by way of Burgundy and England, surprisingly the ‘food capital’ of the age. After a diversion to the Iberian peninsula, they conclude in Germany with lively songs that are a true celebration of ale and… eggs! Works by Machaut, Guillaume de (1300-1377)

| Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 01:30pm The Gospel according to the other Mary John Adams has proven in his past work that he is not one to shun big themes. Famous for being the composer who added depth to the minimal music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass by allowing romantic gestures and modern techniques, he has dealt with political issues such as terrorism, 9/11, the atomic bomb and the Los Angeles riots. Now Adams is taking the challenge to delve into the greatest story of Western history. He created a
modern passion, centring not on Jesus, but on Mary Magdalene. Through her eyes we witness the suffering of the world and the compassion of man. A poignant and captivating modern passion for our current dark times. Los Angeles première 31st May 2012.

| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 9-Jun-13 07:30pm Orchestral: Around Britten and Bach We are delighted to welcome the Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan for their Ulverston Festival debut. In Britten’s ‘Simple Symphony’ the composer reworks eight themes that he wrote in childhood, making them “fit for general consumption”. Bach wrote harpsichord concertos for performances in a coffee house in Leipzig – they are now commonly performed on the modern piano, and Haydn even suggested they could be performed on the fortepiano or pipe organ.Vaughan Williams’ mystical and atmospheric Tallis Fantasia has come to join the crowning glories of English orchestral music, with its unique effect in the division of the string section into two blocs who converse with each other from either end of the stalls. When he wrote the Introduction and Allegro, Elgar was an international celebrity with a string of major compositions under his belt. According to Elgar, the inspiration behind this string piece was a folk-tune, distantly-heard whilst holidaying in Wales. Elgar resurrected the baroque Concerto Grosso style, wherein a group of soloists alternately emerges from and blends back into the orchestral ranks - it’s a fitting end to a Festival that has demonstrated the pivotal influence Baroque styles played on much of the music we hear today. | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Monday 10-Jun-13 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic: A Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick's legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey owes much of its power to the music he chose. Anyone who has seen it surely remembers the scene in which a spaceship dances majestically around the Earth to the sound of An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) by Johann Strauss (Jr)… Music by Ligeti, Khachaturian, and Richard Strauss also helped to make the film what it is.
