|
![]() | ||
| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Friday 24-May-13 06:30pm Robertson leads Ravel and Gershwin Ravel, who heard jazz in Harlem with Gershwin, was dumbfounded by the dazzling Rhapsody in Blue, which Gershwin played at a birthday party for the French composer. When Gershwin asked to study with him, Ravel said "It is better to write good Gershwin than bad Ravel." The jazz-influenced Concerto for the Left Hand was written for a pianist grievously injured during the First World War. The dark undertones of La Valse, an homage to Viennese waltz, suggest a furious farewell to gentility in post-war Europe. Elliott Carter's powerful Variations for Orchestra, another 20th-century masterwork, opens the program. | ||

| Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus), Oslo 0250, Norway Friday 24-May-13 07:30pm Saraste's farewell as chief conductor This is by no means a farewell concert as Saraste will be returning as guest conductor already in the 2013–2014 season. At the same time, these concerts mark the end of a seven-year engagement with us in Oslo as well as an extremely important chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history. It will be next to impossible to leave the concert hall unmoved when the final chorus of Mahler’s’ symphony no. 2 finishes with “Bereite dich zu leben”. | ||

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Wednesday 29-May-13 10:00am Dvořák's Cello Concerto with Gautier Capuçon: Katharine Hanrahan Open Rehearsal Music from three Eastern Europeans gives this program a delightfully colorful sound palette. Dvořák began his enticing concerto while living in New York, but upon returning to Europe, he learned that a woman he’d once loved had died. His youthful song to her permeates this work. Gramophone called Monsieur Capuçon’s recording of it “magical." Kodály’s Dances of Galánta is raucous yet vibrant, and Bartók’s ballet suite in one act features a huge orchestra playing music with dark and totally dramatic undertones. | ||

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 29-May-13 08:00pm The Art of Jean-Philippe Collard: Part 2 France has given great gifts to the world and one of them is pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. His elegance, refinement and pianistic style are legendary and we are proud to be able to offer him in concert for a second evening. His chosen repertoire will be French as he touches three of France’s greatest composers: Ravel, Debussy and Fauré.
In this program, Collard is joined by Denis Brott for a performance of Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano written in 1915. Violinist Giora Schmidt and Collard present Ravel’s famous Tzigane and the concert closes with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s astonishingly beautiful and unmistakably French Quartet in C minor for Piano and Strings. | ||

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 30-May-13 07:30pm Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra London Tonight’s programme marks the centenary (29 May 1913) of one of the most famous premieres in musical history: Stravinsky’s primitivist ballet The Rite of Spring. Showered throughout by a torrential hail of farmyard noises from the gallery, the whole thing ended in uproar with the young conductor, Pierre Monteux, and his musicians fleeing for their lives. Puccini, who was in the Paris audience that night, described it as ‘the creation of a madman.’ Yet Stravinsky claimed that he was merely ‘the vessel through which the Rite passed.’ Opening the concert is Debussy’s no less groundbreaking Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune. ‘From that moment,’ wrote Pierre Boulez, ‘music began to beat with a new pulse’. | ||
