| Süreyya Opera House, Istanbul, Eyüp Merkez Mh., Bahariye Cd No:29, Istanbul, Turkey Wednesday 19-Jun-13 08:00pm Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble Winning the hearts and minds of audiences for their idealism as much as for their ravishing music, the Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble will give the world premiere of the festival’s commission to Kamran İnce: “Nasreddin Hodja”, a work which will probably be a most warm-hearted surprise for music lovers. These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent ensemble pianists of our times, Zeynep Özsuca had cooperated with various artists including Magdalena Kožená, Rolando Villazon, Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. In addition to all prominent orchestras in Hungary, French horn player Dániel Molnár also performs in several important orchestras in Europe, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. | Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 03:00pm Dowland Songs and Dances Plus Galliards, Pavans, Almands and other instrumental music. Born 450 years ago this year, the great English Renaissance composer John Dowland continues to inspire performers and composers with the expressive intensity of his songs, providing the foundations for some of Britten’s most haunting instrumental works. Yet Dowland’s own music is not all darkly coloured: alongside some of his most famous and melancholy songs, a stellar collective of outstanding Dowland interpreters perform less well-known pieces which find him adapting the dance forms of the day in exquisitely decorated music that is by turns sprightly and stately. | ||

| Aldeburgh Church, Aldeburgh IP15 5DY, United Kingdom Friday 21-Jun-13 03:00pm Britten–Pears Young Artists II A concert that juxtaposes the sounds of a horn quartet with viola – Hindemith and Britten’s own instrument – is an alluring prospect, and the instruments’ very essence seems to be represented here. The viola’s burnished eloquence weeps in memorials by Hindemith and Bridge and spins fantastical tales in Schumann’s fairy stories; the horn’s heritage celebrated in smooth cantilenas and quicksilver caprice. Ghosts lurk here too – the horn virtuoso Dennis Brain and his quartet, and Britten, whose deft arrangements of other people’s music so often blends poetry and polish, working with the grain to reveal new beauty beneath the veneer. | ||

| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 04:30pm Wagner's Ring: Siegfried Opera North’s production of Wagner’s Ring combines both visual impact and great singing and playing. In the words of The Times on Das Rheingold, ‘Farnes has done many fine things at Opera North, but his pacing of this 150-minute sweep of music, his care about balance… and the sumptuousness of the orchestral textures – all this constitutes a massive achievement.’ In the penultimate part of this great tragedy of love and power, the hero Siegfried awakens the warrior maiden Brünnhilde, lying in a deep sleep surrounded by a magic fire, and makes her his wife.
