| Chester Cathedral, Chester CH1 2HU, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:30pm International Artist Concert British conductor Duncan Ward is emerging as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. In 2013 he is Music Director of the critically-acclaimed charity Streetwise Opera’s 10thanniversary production and was recently appointed on the recommendation of Sir Simon Rattle as Conducting Scholar at the Berlin Philharmonic. After winning several grand prizes in her native Korea, Jackie Jaekyung Yoo has enjoyed further success in international competitions and has appeared as soloist with orchestras and performed numerous solo recitals across Europe. She performs Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 1, one of the composer’s most popular works, with a wealth of uplifting tunes, frequent, provocative changes of mood and a wonderfully high-spirited last movement. As on the previous night, two Haydn symphonies complete the programme, including ‘La poule’, which derives its nickname from the ‘clucking’ second subject of its first movement. Tickets £18 Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975), Piano Concerto no. 1 in C minor for piano, trumpet and string orchestra, Op.35 Purcell, Henry (1659-1695), Chaconne in G Minor, Z 730 (arr. Britten) | ||

| Orangery Sanssouci: Terraces, Potsdam, Mulberry Avenue, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 15-Jun-13 04:00pm Concerto Grotto The Faroe Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean between the British Isles, Norway and Iceland. They have their own language and culture and as a nation with equal rights they belong to the Kingdom of Denmark. They are also home to an ensemble whom composer and pianist Kristian Blak writes his music for: inspired by the islands’ traditional music and their magnificent landscapes, improvisationally spontaneous, floating freely between the styles and as unpredictable as the Faroese weather. Yggdrasil is the world tree in Northern mythology lowering its roots into the deepest depth of the underworld – YGGDRASIL have already played concerts in the rock caves of their craggy islands, now they dive into Sanssouci’s underworld and take you into the grotto behind the jubilee terrace’s vine covered arches and onto a fantastical journey of sound all the way to the Faroe Islands.

| United Methodist Church, San Luis Obispo, CA, 1515 Fredericks St, San Luis Obispo, 93405, United States Monday 22-Jul-13 07:30pm Chamber Series: Born from Struggle Many great works of art are born from tragedy, strife and struggle. These three pieces, written in different parts of the world in different time periods, represent the struggles each composer faced. In 1915 France was in the midst of WW I, and Debussy struggled with the cancer that would take his life. In addition to Napolean's invasion of Vienna and his deteriorating relationships with family, Beethoven also had to contend with deafness while writing Op. 95, one of his most celebrated quartets. And the String Quartet No. 6 was the last piece of music Bartok write in his native Hungary, having to flee the Nazis in WW II. | ||

| Cuesta College Cultural and Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo, CA, Highway 1, San Luis Obispo, 93405, United States Sunday 28-Jul-13 03:00pm Chamber Series: Musical Pairs The 2013 summer festival wraps up with a chamber music concert. Just as the violin concerto and Eroica were audacious works of orchestral music, the trio and string quartet were longer and larger-scale than anything that ever came before them. Celebrate the end of another fantastic summer with an intimate afternoon of chamber music with the Festival artists. | ||
