Dvořák began his enticing concerto while living in New York, but upon returning to Europe, he learned that a woman he’d once loved had died. His youthful song to her permeates this work. Gramophone called Monsieur Capuçon’s recording of it “magical." | Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 1-Jun-13 08:00pm Dvořák's Cello Concerto and New World Symphony Thrilling yet moving, powerful yet tender, Dvořák’s New World Symphony is an enormously popular work sure to enthrall listeners young and old. It anchors a program focused on the music of Dvořák, whose works are often a delight of folk color and gypsy flavor. Also on the program is his enticing Cello Concerto, with its elegiac song to a lost love. French cellist Gautier Capuçon, praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for his “eloquent and tonally resplendent playing,” does the honors in the popular and plaintive concerto.

| King Georges Hall, Blackburn, Blackburn BB2 1AA, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm The Hallé This very special concert, conducted by Cristian Mandeal, will feature the winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award at this year's Leeds International Piano Competition – one of the most prestigious in the world. Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto is a work of great brilliance and virtuosity. Though modelled on the late piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven’s own musical voice is already very much in evidence. The second half of the concert features one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire – Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’. Packed with famous tunes, Dvořák’s best known work combines the folk music and landscapes of America with a yearning nostalgia for the composer’s native Bohemia. A stunning climax to the Blackburn Classics Series. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:00pm Dramatic Flair The pure drama of these masterpieces of orchestral repertoire will make anyone a lover of classical music. The intense virtuosity required showcases our Festival participant orchestra and guest conductor Larry Rachleff.
Mozart was the master of orchestral and operatic spectacle, and you’ll easily understand why Prague was deep in “Mozart mania” when he wrote this majestic symphony.
Brahms’ and Dvořák’s exotic dances are among the most flamboyant classical works ever written and made both composers legendary.
The Festival welcomes the return of former student participant David Coucheron, now concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as he performs Bruch’s lyrical violin concerto No. 1.

Dvořák explained “I have not actually used any of the Native American melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint and orchestral colour.” Despite this, Dvořák does not completely shun the infectious folk music of his native Bohemia, the influence of which can be heard throughout the symphony.
