| Kings Place: Hall One, London, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Talk and Concert: Orient in Song The great Goethe, when in his sixties, fell under the spell of Hafiz, the 14th century Persian poet. Hafiz’s poetry inspired Goethe to create the ‘West-Östlicher Divan’ – a collection of love poems, epigrams and drinking songs. Goethe’s verses in turn inspired composers such as Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn, while poems of Hafiz were set to music by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. Join us as we explore Europe’s century-long love affair with the Orient through poetry, painting and song. Ravel, Maurice (1875-1937), Shéhérazade (excerpts) | ||

François-Xavier Roth conducts this spectacular orchestral showpiece alongside Webern's youthful traditional romantic tone poem and music by Mozart. Works by Mozart, Franz Xaver (1791-1844)

A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love.

| La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Monday 27-May-13 08:00pm Albert Dohmen: Sonetti di Michalangelo e del Petrarca The recital by Albert Dohmen provides the public with a chance to discover an exceptional singer who is, amongst other things, one of the most talented Wotans of his generation. The sheer sonorousness of his dark, warm voice is fascinating, and gives substance to all the registers of the performance. His musical command and sensitivity are also remarkable in the most intimist repertoires, such as the romantic Lied, presented here in all its aspects and extremes: the wonder of love with sonnets by Petrarch set to music by Liszt, existential meditation with Wolf’s sober and powerful Michelangelo Lieder, the hallucinatory melancholy which permeates Pfitzner’s melodies, and the sublimation of death by love, which Strauss celebrates like no other. Befreit – ‘liberated’ – is the last Lied in this programme, and O Glück – ‘oh happiness’ – is the last sung word. This is, indeed, what the evening promises.Image credit: (c) Johannes Ifkovits Pfitzner, Hans (1869-1949), Lieder | ||

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Sunday 9-Jun-13 03:00pm Spira Mirabilis Experience Richard Strauss' extraordinary Metamorphosen in a new way. Spira mirabalis, the revolutionary orchestra made up of Europe's finest young musicians that perform without a conductor, continue their exciting relationship with Southbank Centre. Written towards the end of the Second World War by a composer who made his mark at the apex of the German Romantic movement, then watched its slow destruction over two world wars in the 20th century, Metamorphosen is Strauss' searing lament for the cultural world of his youth. 23 solo strings swelling with a rich sense of longing and poignant beauty. Before a complete performance of the work, hear the orchestra take you through examples of their own interpretation of the score. This is followed by a vivid The Rest Is Noise keynote talk which brings alive the cultural landscape of the mid 20th century. | ||

Anyone who has seen it surely remembers the scene in which a spaceship dances majestically around the Earth to the sound of An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) by Johann Strauss (Jr)… Music by Ligeti, Khachaturian, and Richard Strauss also helped to make the film what it is. | St Paul's Cathedral, London, London EC4M 8AD, United Kingdom Monday 8-Jul-13 08:00pm LSO and Tenebrae Renewing their stunningly successful artistic partnership, LSO and Tenebrae join forces for another specially conceived Festival highlight. The concert reflects the paradoxes of war and peace and celebrates the transformative power of words and music, opening with Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s exquisite elegy to Benjamin Britten. Britten’s own solo oboe work will be performed in various parts of the Cathedral, interwoven with Josquin’s Missa L'homme armé – one of the most uplifting and famous Renaissance settings of the Mass, based on a crusading ballad, the Armed Man, which was Mediaeval Europe’s most popular song. Then follows Strauss’ Metamorphosen, a profoundly moving response to the destruction of Munich in the Second World War; Samuel Barber’s most popular and expressive work, the Adagio, will be heard in a unique version approved by the composer’s estate for this one-off performance, bringing choir and orchestra together and giving the concert an unforgettable close.
