| Aula der Universität Göttingen, 37073 Göttingen, Germany Saturday 18-May-13 11:00am Carole Cerasi - Harpsichord Recital Harpsichord virtuoso Carole Cerasi, who was born in Sweden,
is the daughter of Sephardi/Turkish parents. Aged eleven she
discovered her special affinity with the harpsichord: today she
appears on the major concert platforms of the world. Cerasi’s
refined and strongly expressive musicianship can’t be confined
to any specific category. She gives this programme, which
includes works by Handel, Mozart and Scarlatti, a variety of accents,
some of them alla turca. Works by Telemann, Georg Philipp (1681-1767)

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm International Chamber Music Season: Borletti-Buitoni Trust celebrated with Mitsuko Uchida Five acclaimed soloists, including 'superb pianist' (New York Times) Jonathan Biss and 'violinist of fiery talents' (The Times) Alina Ibragimova, join forces to perform Schubert's ever popular Trout quintet in this second Borletti-Buitoni Trust concert. Already known for her varied recordings, from Schubert to Michel van der Aa, mezzo soprano Christianne Stotijn moves effortlessly between styles and here presents two very different sets of songs. Hear Brahms' brooding Two songs for alto, viola and piano and Schoenberg's early atonal cycle Buch der hängenden Gärten. As The Times wrote of a recent recording, 'whatever the song, Stotijn sings from the heart to the heart.' Before joining Stotijn in the Brahms, Antoine Tamestit plays the first of Mozart's energetic two duos for violin and viola with Alina Ibragimova. Queen Elizabeth Hall at 6.15pm - pre-concert talk. In 2012 the Elias String Quartet embarks on a tour performing the complete cycle of Beethoven quartets at venues all over the UK. In early 2011, with BBT's support, they launched a unique, website which openly shares with the public their immersion in the study, analysis, practice and discovery of Beethoven. Their aim was to demystify both the music and reveal how they are preparing for this huge undertaking. Find out how they have fared. Free. The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall at 9.45pm - Borletti-Buitoni Trust 'Out of the Box'. Martin Fröst and friends - watch this space to find out who! Free. | ||

|
![]() | ||
| Stadthalle, Göttingen, 37073 Göttingen, Germany Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Galaconcert: Sandrine Piau The programme of this year’s Gala Concert
tells of the beauty of the Orient and of its
darker sides. “Queen of the Baroque”
French vocalist Sandrine Piau made her
name as one of the top interpreters of
music from Lully to Handel, working with
conductors such as Jacobs, Christie, Herreweghe
and Rousset. In arias from Giulio
Cesare and Alexander Balus, the Gala
audience witnesses her as the Egyptian
ruler Cleopatra, around whose dramatic
love affairs countless tales have been spun.
With Johann Joseph Fux’ splendidly colourful
Turcaria, the FestspielOrchester
Göttingen takes us into the fray: we find
ourselves in the midst of the Turkish siege
of Vienna in 1683. And by alternating Sephardic
Jewish folk music with Baroque
works, the Ensemble NAYA spans a musical
bridge that links the Orient with the
Occident. Handel, George Frideric (1685-1759), Alexander Balus, HWV 65: Hark! Hark! He strikes the Golden Lyre

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Sunday 19-May-13 07:30pm International Chamber Music Season: Borletti-Buitoni Trust celebrated with Mitsuko Uchida Following international acclaim for its recording of French music, including the Gramophone Record of the Year Award in 2009, Quatuor Ebène joins Mitsuko Uchida for a performance of Franck's late Piano Quintet in F minor, one of the pinnacles of Franck's formidable chamber output. Elsewhere, a selection of songs from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn is sung by Dutch baritone Henk Neven, who has been described variously as 'outstanding' (Sunday Times), an 'exceptional voice' (The Guardian) and a singer with 'astonishing technical finesse' (The Times). Jacob Ter Veldhuis, composer of self-styled 'avant-garde pop', collaborated with Jörgen van Rijen to create 'I was like WOW!' for trombone and video, a melodious and poignant meditation on the stories of Iraq War veterans. Van Rijen, who is principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw who is principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw and Lucerne Festival Orchestras. Others have a gift for beautifully articulating in words what they do and why they do it. Both qualities happen to reside in pianist Jonathan Biss'. One of the finest pianists of his generation and one of the first ever BBT award-winners, Biss has already cast words of wisdom on career building in the film that launched BBT Celebrated - discover more at this talk.
