Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-May-13 07:30pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: Mozart and Mahler Elegant and emotive music from two of Vienna's finest composers. Mozart's Third Violin Concerto was written when he was only 19. It is full of youthful charm, with a slow movement of tender romance. The final rondo features a lively dance-tune associated with Strasbourg, from which the concerto gets its nickname, 'Strasbourg'. Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which opens with jingling sleigh-bells, is one of his most delicate. Yet there is all the contrast you'd expect from Mahler - a quirky scherzo, and a slow movement of yearning beauty. The symphony ends with a soprano solo unfolding a child's vision of Heaven. Showered throughout by a torrential hail of farmyard noises from the gallery, the whole thing ended in uproar with the young conductor, Pierre Monteux, and his musicians fleeing for their lives. Puccini, who was in the Paris audience that night, described it as ‘the creation of a madman.’ Yet Stravinsky claimed that he was merely ‘the vessel through which the Rite passed.’ Opening the concert is Debussy’s no less groundbreaking Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune. ‘From that moment,’ wrote Pierre Boulez, ‘music began to beat with a new pulse’. This is music that appears to breathe the air of a different planet, lacerating 18th-century sensibilities along the way. Not only is it longer than any symphony previously written, but the emotional content is startlingly raw, with brutal sforzandos rammed home, harmonic dissonances revelled in as never before, and fizzing virtuosity demanded of the players at every turn. Dvořák explained “I have not actually used any of the Native American melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint and orchestral colour.” Despite this, Dvořák does not completely shun the infectious folk music of his native Bohemia, the influence of which can be heard throughout the symphony.
