| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 03:00pm Dowland Songs and Dances Plus Galliards, Pavans, Almands and other instrumental music. Born 450 years ago this year, the great English Renaissance composer John Dowland continues to inspire performers and composers with the expressive intensity of his songs, providing the foundations for some of Britten’s most haunting instrumental works. Yet Dowland’s own music is not all darkly coloured: alongside some of his most famous and melancholy songs, a stellar collective of outstanding Dowland interpreters perform less well-known pieces which find him adapting the dance forms of the day in exquisitely decorated music that is by turns sprightly and stately. | ||

Since the Danish monarch’s sister Anne was married to the future king of England, exquisite English music artists soon found their way to the music-loving king’s court. So Christian’s court orchestra is not only shining in Venetian splendour, the Golden Age of English music also lets its brightest star glitter in Denmark: John Dowland. His "Tear Pavane" alias "Flow my Tears" captured an epoch’s "Weltschmerz", turned it into sounds and was heard all across Europe. In 1604 Dowland put together seven self-made cover versions of his greatest hit with other dances for an instrumental consort and dedicated it to England’s new Queen Ann. Some of this music was created in her hometown of Copenhagen.

| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Friday 21-Jun-13 11:00am Tokyo Quartet The chance to hear one of the world’s finest chamber
ensembles is special enough. That it comes only weeks
before it disbands after a remarkable four decade
career makes this an occasion to savour. The Tokyo
Quartet bring their sumptuous, burnished sound,
precision of ensemble and deep musical understanding
to a compelling programme; Beethoven’s fizzing,
compressed energy, Bartok’s poignant farewell to
the form and Debussy’s only quartet, agile, poetic,
distilling his visionary new musical world into this
most traditional of forms. Groundbreaking, ingenious
masterpieces all three, and a fitting triptych for a
revered quartet’s farewell.

They champion the work of both young and established composers, whether singing Tomkins or Takemitsu, Bach or Bublé. Love and War: two favourite Renaissance themes feature in this programme of music from England, Italy and France. The inspiration for the first half is the 1592 collection of madrigals Il trionfi di Dori; the second half starts and finishes with two of the great chansons by Clément Janequin – his depiction of street life in Paris (Les Cris de Paris) and his musical rendition of the 1515 Battle of Marignano (La Guerre). | Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Friday 21-Jun-13 08:30pm Licht op de langste dag On the longest day of the year, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic take their last bow – with an optimistic gesture. Supported by Visual Kitchen’s video and lighting design, four compositions on the theme of ‘light’ are performed. Two of these are brand new, an emphatic statement by the orchestra to leave something behind for the future. Dutch composer Matijs de Roo, a finalist at last year’s Toonzetters competition, has created a punchy and fast moving orchestral work; the French composer Pascal Dusapin (previously at the festival with Passion and Medea) has written a violin concerto titled Aufgang, which is performed by Renaud Capuçon. The orchestra will also play the sprightly Lumen II by Régis Campo and L’heure bleue by the Japanese composer Misato Mochizuki, a musical interpretation of the ‘blue hour’ of twilight.
Tickets €27.50 - 22.50, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. | Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 11:00am Piano Century: The Year 1913 Two of the pivotal moments in musical history, from exactly a hundred years ago, thrill in radical and revealing couplings. A mysterious alchemy occurs when orchestral scores are heard played on two pianos. Rhythms become tauter, highly sprung, harmonies crystallise, tiny details of the music’s inner workings emerge with new clarity and focus. Debussy and Stravinsky are heard afresh in piano arrangements by the composers. Zimmerman’s work (itself an arrangement of an orchestral score) teases us with fragments from Beethoven and Bach to Boogie-Woogie and quotes directly from Jeux, with which it shares a fluidity, quicksilver changes of direction and almost improvisatory air. The controlled venom, intricate organisation and relentless impetus of Stravinsky’s infamous Rite fi nd a parallel in Boulez’s innovative Structures – precisely and minutely organised but with a momentum, percussive power and glittering brilliance that makes an explosive, visceral impact. There will be a 30-minute interval.

Indeed, because music was so highly appreciated at the Courts, composers were often paid to travel in order to bring back the latest styles and compositions. So it was that during the first half of the eighteenth century many French composers adopted Italian elements in their compositions, and also used the Italian vocabulary to name works and movements. | New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm The King of Denmark's Delight Virtuosic music for lute and orpharion solo and in duets John Dowland was one of the greatest masters of writing music for the lute. When he reached the pinnacle of his career he was Christian IV’s court lutenist in Copenhagen for eight years. He was rumoured to be an English spy, or maybe people envied his annual salary of 500 thalers. Indeed, Tobias Hume could only dream of making such an amount. He earned his money as a mercenary and nearly had to go with Gustav Adolf’s army when they marched into Mecklenburg. So captain Hume could only be a part-time viola da gamba genius. Nevertheless, in 1607 he also arranged his "Poeticall Musicke" for lutes clearly thinking of the orpharion. English musicians made this lute instrument with its metal strings popular at the Danish court, too. That is why one of three remaining original examples is kept in the Museum of Musical History in Copenhagen and serves as model for almost all modern copies. Listening to an orpharion is a rare treat. Listening to a duet of orpharions is practically unheard of. Don’t miss the opportunity.
