| New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Thursday 20-Jun-13 08:00pm Seven Tears Dance Music by John Dowland (1563-1626) From his collection "Lachrimae or Seven Tears" and dance music from the court of Christian IV of Denmark by William Brade, Thomas Simpson and Melchius Borchgrevinck Christian IV of Denmark was the most powerful man in the North before his Swedish opponent Gustav Adolf took over. Since the Danish monarch’s sister Anne was married to the future king of England, exquisite English music artists soon found their way to the music-loving king’s court. So Christian’s court orchestra is not only shining in Venetian splendour, the Golden Age of English music also lets its brightest star glitter in Denmark: John Dowland. His "Tear Pavane" alias "Flow my Tears" captured an epoch’s "Weltschmerz", turned it into sounds and was heard all across Europe. In 1604 Dowland put together seven self-made cover versions of his greatest hit with other dances for an instrumental consort and dedicated it to England’s new Queen Ann. Some of this music was created in her hometown of Copenhagen.

| Orangery Sanssouci: Raffael Hall, Potsdam, Orangery Sanssouci, Potsdam, Germany Friday 21-Jun-13 07:30pm Lighthouse Buxtehude Young Bach walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck so that he could learn from this man: Dietrich Buxtehude, originally from Helsingborg in Denmark, organist of Lübeck’s Church of St. Mary for nearly forty years, was an institution in the musical life of Northern Germany and had a lasting influence on generations of composers. Paul Hillier and his ensemble THEATRE OF VOICES show him integrated into a wide reaching network of musical relations that stretched from Denmark and Sweden all the way to Italy. They perform two of his less played Swedish cantatas and move some less known predecessors, contemporaries and students of the master into the present day limelight.

| Park Sanssouci: Nordic Garden, Potsdam, Mulberry Ave, Potsdam, Germany Friday 21-Jun-13 10:00pm The Troll Night Twilight in the quiet park – and the Nordic Garden turns into a magical forest. Mysterious sounds are heard, the grottos are filled with archaic singing and call on wondrous and eerie creatures to appear from their hiding places. Trolls, elves and all kinds of mystical beings appear from and disappear into the darkness: midsummer night in Sanssouci.
You are strolling through the nightly park between Nordic Garden and Orangery Terraces. First you may meet a vocal enchantress, then there is a Sami evocator and an enchanting choir and secret musicians let you listen to their invisible music: even musicologist Johann Mattheson referred to a reliable source when he reported "underground cliff concerts", that confuse the minds of decent Norwegians during certain nights. Allow yourself to be enchanted by an unforgettable midsummer night’s dream in Sanssouci.

| New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm The King of Denmark's Delight Virtuosic music for lute and orpharion solo and in duets John Dowland was one of the greatest masters of writing music for the lute. When he reached the pinnacle of his career he was Christian IV’s court lutenist in Copenhagen for eight years. He was rumoured to be an English spy, or maybe people envied his annual salary of 500 thalers. Indeed, Tobias Hume could only dream of making such an amount. He earned his money as a mercenary and nearly had to go with Gustav Adolf’s army when they marched into Mecklenburg. So captain Hume could only be a part-time viola da gamba genius. Nevertheless, in 1607 he also arranged his "Poeticall Musicke" for lutes clearly thinking of the orpharion. English musicians made this lute instrument with its metal strings popular at the Danish court, too. That is why one of three remaining original examples is kept in the Museum of Musical History in Copenhagen and serves as model for almost all modern copies. Listening to an orpharion is a rare treat. Listening to a duet of orpharions is practically unheard of. Don’t miss the opportunity.

| Sanssouci Palace: Court of Honour, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Sunday 23-Jun-13 09:00pm Scandinavian Last Night This week midsummer night is celebrated everywhere in the North and each country has its very own customs. In Denmark and Norway the summer solstice festivities were connected to John the Baptist’s saint’s day, so celebrations commence tonight into "St. Hans Eve". Lighting huge bonfires to scare away evil spirits is always an important part, then there is the traditional "fire speech", which takes a satirical look at day-to-day affairs. In Denmark they even place a straw witch on top of the fire and send her back to Mount Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany – German craftsmen are reported to have brought this custom to the country a long time ago. A night of miracles and legends – perfect for entering musical fairy-tale worlds where Shakespeare’s elves, Nordic trolls and characters from Arabian nights gather …
