| Dr Anton Philipszaal, The Hague, Spuiplein 150, The Hague 2511, Netherlands Sunday 19-May-13 02:15pm Wibi Soerjadi soloist in Chopin After last season’s sublime performance, Wibi Soerjadi absolutely had to come back to The Hague. The Dutch pianist has played in all the world’s great concert halls, including Vienna’s Musikverein and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He’ll play with the Residentie Orkest/The Hague Philharmonic in Chopin’s First Piano Concerto, a masterwork that gives the pianist every opportunity to show off what he or she can do, just as Chopin himself did when he wowed Warsaw with the piece in 1830. The concert will close with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, one of the most beloved in the symphonic repertoire, conducted by a favourite with audiences, Santtu-Matias Rouvali. | ||

The waiter will serve a Chinese guzheng under the warm light of an alpenhorn lamp, and with the Indian items, you’ll have to blow hard to keep the snakes charmed! This humorous performance has surprising tastes from all over the world, brought together in a set meal of sounds.

| Royal Theater Carré, Amsterdam, Amstel 115-125, Amsterdam 1018 EM, Netherlands Sunday 2-Jun-13 08:30pm El Gusto - Casbah Blues In their younger years, the musicians of the chaabi orchestra El Gusto enjoyed great fame in the Casbah, the traditional quarter clustered around the citadel of Algiers. Side by side Jews and Muslims, Africans and Europeans played and sung their traditional songs about love, heartbreak, friendship and betrayal. That is until the Algerian revolution drove them apart. Now these musicians are all in their seventies and eighties, but they still have a great passion for the chaabi, entrancing folk music with influences from North Africa, Andalusia and the Middle-East. The musicians were gathered together from all parts of the world for a historical reunion, proving that music has no age limit. For they still play their instruments as if they were dancing with a beautiful woman, and still their deep-rooted songs ‘make you forget hunger, thirst or grief’.Tickets €35/20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. In her solo work she draws out a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes. At the Bimhuis, Guðnadóttir will play two works on newly developed electric cellos: one utilising feedback and one which is connected to wooden sculptures causing them to vibrate along with the music. The main piece she will be playing is the title work of her latest album Leyfðu ljosinu; a multi-layered, hypnotic sound construction consisting of vocals and cello, which gradually swells to massive proportions.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Thursday 6-Jun-13 08:30pm For Bunita Marcus The music of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987) is a paragon of understatement. His compositions are characterised by a deceptive emptiness and daringly sparse instrumentations. Feldman wrote this piano work for composer Bunita Marcus, who was inseparable as his artistic companion in the last years of his life. The score plays a complex and elongated game with different, overlapping time signatures and metres. By creating a scarcity of events, Feldman manages to exert a hypnotic influence on the listener. Hardly anything happens and at the same time a lot happens, and thereby his music touches on the mysteries of time itself. It’s mystical stuff that could not be in any better hands than Reinbert de Leeuw’s, who is a master of tension and focus..Tickets €22, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. | Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 01:30pm The Gospel according to the other Mary John Adams has proven in his past work that he is not one to shun big themes. Famous for being the composer who added depth to the minimal music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass by allowing romantic gestures and modern techniques, he has dealt with political issues such as terrorism, 9/11, the atomic bomb and the Los Angeles riots. Now Adams is taking the challenge to delve into the greatest story of Western history. He created a
modern passion, centring not on Jesus, but on Mary Magdalene. Through her eyes we witness the suffering of the world and the compassion of man. A poignant and captivating modern passion for our current dark times. Los Angeles première 31st May 2012.

Three of The Netherlands’ most outstanding ensembles join the virtuoso American percussionist and conductor Steven Schick for a marathon performance of Scottish composer James Dillon’s masterpiece Nine Rivers. This vast, ambitious work consists of nine parts for varying instrumentations, ranging from solo percussion and a cappella choir to strings and electronics. The piece focuses on the river as a metaphor for time and memory, while also playing games with the memory of the audience.
Dillon was inspired to write Nine Rivers by Rimbaud’s Le Bateau Ivre. Just as the boat in this famous poem crashes through the river towards the ocean, Dillon’s music moves from weightless hyperactivity through bleak horror to Wagnerian grandeur in a long, continuous, ever evolving ritual.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 11-Jun-13 08:30pm Desdemona Toni Morrison's response to Othello discusses racism, war and oppression.
Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.

on death. The orchestra will play three of Holliger’s own works: two adaptations of ominous, late piano works by Liszt and the Dutch premiere of Ardeur noire, his homage to Debussy. On the occasion of Britten’s centenary, composer Conor Mitchell added eight new compositions to the four original songs. Four of these are set to poems which W.H. Auden had written for Britten, but which were never used; and four are set to new lyrics by Mark Ravenhill. The songs deal with excitement, ecstasy, doubt and despair. They make up a subtle commentary on Britten’s relationship with Auden, their impending break-up and his budding love for his future life partner Peter Pears. A music performance of obscured love letters.Tickets €22, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour no internval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk | ||

| Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 3, Amsterdam, Netherlands Thursday 20-Jun-13 08:30pm The Gloaming Early in 2011, by way of experiment, they met for a jamming session in the studio. At the end of that same year, the Irish Times hailed them as the new supergroup of Irish Music. Now, 18 months later, the Gloaming make their Dutch debut at the Holland Festival. Their instant success does not come as such a surprise though when you consider that all members of the band are seasoned recording artists in Irish music, some having worked with such names as Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne and Yoko Ono. With The Gloaming they are breaking new ground, stretching the boundaries of Irish folk music. Their performances are virtuoso yet subtle, powerful yet controlled, with beautiful melodies and, most of all, revelling in the sheer joy of music!

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Friday 21-Jun-13 08:30pm Licht op de langste dag On the longest day of the year, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic take their last bow – with an optimistic gesture. Supported by Visual Kitchen’s video and lighting design, four compositions on the theme of ‘light’ are performed. Two of these are brand new, an emphatic statement by the orchestra to leave something behind for the future. Dutch composer Matijs de Roo, a finalist at last year’s Toonzetters competition, has created a punchy and fast moving orchestral work; the French composer Pascal Dusapin (previously at the festival with Passion and Medea) has written a violin concerto titled Aufgang, which is performed by Renaud Capuçon. The orchestra will also play the sprightly Lumen II by Régis Campo and L’heure bleue by the Japanese composer Misato Mochizuki, a musical interpretation of the ‘blue hour’ of twilight.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:30pm Mahlerlieder East-Tyrolean outfit Franui make Mahler sound like never before. With their unusual, brass-dominated instrumentation this ‘Musicabanda’ from the village of Innervillgraten developed their unique sound by combining folk with classical music and jazz. Mahler’s late romantic songs undergo a fascinating metamorphosis, taking them back to their folk roots. The songs are interspersed with readings from Robert Walsers Kleine Dichtungen. The result is stunning: songs which through their sparse instrumentation sound heart-wrenchingly poignant, close harmonies of a touching honesty and gentle winds and brass through which the magnificent musical genius of the master resounds. A must for anyone who loves Mahler, and for those who weren’t aware of it yet.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Monday 24-Jun-13 08:30pm Brooklyn Babylon - Big band music from the heart of Brooklyn, New York At the dawn of the 20th century, Brooklyn is being targeted by real estate developers with plans to build the world’s highest tower right in the centre of the New York borough. When master carpenter Lev is commissioned to construct a carrousel to crown the skyscraper, he finds himself torn between his ambition and his loyalty to the community.
Brooklyn Babylon is an urban fable which unfolds wordlessly. The performance combines the haunting animations and live painting by graphic and comic artist Danijel Zezelj with the exciting, cosmopolitan polyphony of Secret Society, an 18-piece bigband led by Darcy James Argue – regarded as one of the great North American jazz musicians of the new generation.

‘What do young girls dream of? Of the knife and of blood.’ This quote from the French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet serves as the starting point for Heiner Goebbels’ latest piece in music theatre. Goebbels has created a collage of texts and music to explore the development of children into adults.
Forty girls and young women from the world famous Vocal Theatre Carmina Slovenica aged between 10 and 20 constantly sway between childish innocence and the unpredictability of adolescence. Switching from medieval to folk works and contemporary music, they portray with unbelievable energy and great musical precision this fascinating and forbidding realm in which the old is no more and the new is still out of reach.Co-production between Steirischer Herbst, Maribor Theater Festival, Festival Borstnikovo srečanje in Maribor 2012 European Capital of Culture , Festival d’Automne à Paris, Grand Theatre, Luxemburg, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussel, Holland Festival, KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen.
