But while Schumann’s magnifi cent cycle creates a large canvas on which to draw his protagonist’s desires and despair, Britten’s is a miracle of concision where every phrase is potent, every song a fl eeting impression befi tting the ‘fragments’ of the title. Birtwistle’s major new cycle reunites composer, writer David Harsent and lead role from his 2009 Aldeburgh-commissioned opera, The Corridor.

| Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 15-Jun-13 08:00pm Stockhausen: Kontakte A sonic tennis match for electronics and live performers, Kontakte is a 20th century musical icon, one of the crowning glories of the first wave of electronic music composition. An inspiration for artists ranging from Jonathan Harvey to Aphex Twin and written in 1958–60, before the invention of musical synthesizers, Stockhausen’s piece was created using technology designed for radio broadcasting.
This version of the piece, combining electronic sounds with acoustic piano and percussion, is the pioneering work which has provided the starting point for the myriad of artists who have explored this rich world of possibilities ever since. The ‘contacts’ of the title emerge as volleys of sound, ‘hit’ between the electronic and the live participants.‘Karlheinz Stockhausen… has visited the outer reaches of music and reported back.’ - BBC Radio 3 presenter Robert Worby

| Royal Academy of Music, Duke's Hall, London, Marylebone Road, London NW1 5HT, United Kingdom Sunday 23-Jun-13 12:00pm Royal Academy of Music / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ is the second of three complete surviving cantatas that Bach wrote for the feast of St Michael. The vivid Biblical account of the battle which Michael and his cohorts fought against Satan has inspired both painters and poets. It also inspired Bach to great heights of pictorial imagery and nowhere is this more evident than in the great fugal chorus with which this cantata begins. Bach illustrates the conflict between heaven and hell with sustained rhythmic tension and a confrontational vigour that is almost startling in its ferocity. This splendid battle music gives way to gentler, more reflective images contained in the work’s two arias. ‘Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort’ is a Trinity cantata which Bach first performed at Leipzig in July 1725. The text is based on the parable of the unjust steward and Bach begins his cantata with a declamatory bass aria rather than the usual chorus. Salomo Franck’s text calling mankind to account is uncompromising and Bach responds with a portentous, unyielding chordal dotted-rhythm against an almost unceasing continuo of semi-quaver triplets. There is colourful word-painting here and also in the duet for soprano and alto. ‘Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg’ is the latest of Bach’s surviving cantatas for the feast of St Michael and All Angels. He probably performed it at Leipzig in 1729. The music of the colourfully scored opening chorus was not entirely new, since Bach had used it, albeit differently scored, as the conclusion to his Weimar congratulatory cantata BWV 208. The work contains two especially appealing arias, a lyrical, dance-like movement for soprano and strings, and a duet for alto and tenor with obbligato bassoon whose diverting serpentine figurations are taken up by the voices in canon. Each cantata concert begins at midday and lasts around one hour. The Academy’s restaurant will be open for light refreshments from 10.30am until the start of each concert. | ||

They show a confidence of expression and technique consistent with Haydn's preeminent position in European musical life. They followed hard upon the second of Haydn's highly successful visits to England and demonstrated that at the age of 65 or so, Haydn still had much to offer in the development of the quartet form. It was indeed the only instrumental form that continued to hold his interest as he drew close to the end of his composing career. Speaking of the richly varied Opus 76 set of quartets, Charles Burney, the English writer and musician, told Haydn that he had "never received more pleasure from instrumental music; they are full of invention, fire, good taste and new effects". Benjamin Britten's Three Divertimenti started life as an abortive string quartet entitled Alla Quartetto Serioso: Go play, boy, play: a quotation from Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. This early version dates from 1933, when the composer was nineteen, and, in turn, it grew out of an Alla Marcia which he had planned for an Emil and the Detectives suite. Five movements were projected for Go play, boy, play, each of which was to portray a schoolboy friend and to give impressions of boyish fun and games. The Alla Marcia was subtitled P.T. (Physical Training), and portrayed David Layton, a considerable athlete who went up to Cambridge. Subtitled Ragging, the third movement portrayed Francis Barton, a friend from prep. school days. The three completed movements were performed in 1933 and were well received, although the composer had his reservations and ceased work on the quartet. Nevertheless they were to receive another airing when a few years later Britten revised them and chose a new title – Three Divertimenti. (Notes by John Dalton courtesy of Making Music.) Schumann was the first great composer to combine piano and string quartet and he did it with such masterly skill, and with such inspiration, that he created in this work one of the eternal jewels in the entire repertoire of chamber music. The thematic material is full of youthful spontaneity and it is shaped and moulded with assured and mature craftsmanship. Only occasionally does the piano override the strings and the five instruments share a texture of extreme clarity and always with well-defined lines. Prize winners in the 2010 Royal Over-Seas League Competition and the 2009 5th Trondheim International String Quartet Competition in Norway, the Finzi Quartet has given recitals and made numerous festival appearances at major venues throughout the UK and Europe, including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Auditorio Sony in Madrid. The Quartet has also performed live on BBC Radio 3 and on Viennese Radio. As selected Young Artists the Quartet has benefited from the support of the Tillett Trust, Park Lane Group, the Tunnell Trust and the Kirckman Concerts Society. The Quartet held a Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester between 2010 and 2012, and made its debut release with Resonus Classics in May 2012. Now based both in London and Paris, the members of the Finzi Quartet are alumni of the Royal College of Music in London and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the Conservatoire National Superior de Musique et de Danse of both Paris and Lyon. British pianist Ashley Fripp has given solo, concerto and chamber music performances in many of the most prestigious venues throughout the UK, such as the Royal Festival, Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham Symphony, Barbican and Wigmore Halls. Recent international invitations have taken him throughout Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, China, Japan, Australia and the USA, to such halls as the Carnegie Hall (New York) and the Audimax Hall (Regensburg). He has won prizes at more than a dozen national and international competitions, including the coveted Gold Medal from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Diploma of Outstanding Merit at the 8th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, 1st Prize at the Brant International Piano Competition and the Award for Keyboard at the Royal Over-Seas League Competition. | Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 27-Jun-13 07:30pm The Birmingham Beethoven Cycle: Symphonies 8 & 9 It’s been an incredible journey, and on this night Andris Nelsons, the CBSO and our world-class Chorus arrive at Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: the summit of any Beethoven cycle - and some say, the whole of classical music. But there’s a world of experience to live through before the CBSO get to that final, transcendent Ode To Joy, and Beethoven’s explosive little Eighth Symphony launches a concert that’s sure to be one of the most talked-about events in Birmingham this year. | Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, Nottingham NG1 5ND, United Kingdom Friday 28-Jun-13 07:30pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra The matchless combination of Andris Nelsons and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra provides all the elements for an astounding concert. And as it takes place at the end of June it’s appropriate to begin with Mendelssohn’s sun-drenched ‘Italian’ Symphony. A ten month tour of Italy in 1830 left him with an overwhelming impression of the ‘land of nature, delighting every heart,’ and inspired him to write his most effervescent symphony three years later.
One of the most moving stories of Beethoven is that one of the soloists at the premiere of his 9th Symphony in 1824 had to turn the deaf composer around so that he could witness the tumultuous applause. Few there could have doubted its seismic status. Visionary in scope, extreme in its gestures and technically daunting (horn players still have cold sweats about one notorious solo), it’s a piece which tears at the boundaries of the classical symphony, nowhere more so than in the choral finale that proclaims the words of Schiller’s Ode to Joy.Image credit: Andris Nelsons with the CBSO © Neil Pugh
