Bach’s sons, this might be a good chance to start. J.C.F. Bach is not well known (much of his music was lost in a WWII bombing raid), but his 20th symphony is a perfect example of the late rococo, particularly in his use of the winds. Ton Koopman has been a leading force in authentic-practice Baroque music for more than 3 decades.

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Friday 28-Feb-14 07:30pm Beethoven's Violin Concerto The Beethoven concerto is the mountain all great violinists must master. Artist-in- Residence Vadim Gluzman’s sure technique and singing tone allow him to scale the heights with perfect aplomb. A new favorite with the musicians, maestro Roth gives us Schubert’s incidental music from the play Rosamunde, scored for soprano, chorus and orchestra. Despite the original failure and loss of the play’s script, some of these movements have subsequently ranked among the composer’s most popular works. «Vadim Gluzman's sensational performance galvanised everyone around him», Telegraph | ||

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Thursday 6-Mar-14 07:30pm Edward Gardner conducts Themes of war begin and end this concert, led by Principal Guest Conductor (and soon to be Chief) Edward Gardner. Britten’s Sinfonia was commissioned by the Japanese government on the very eve of WWII, then rejected because of its religious and pacifistic nature. Janácek’s Sinfonietta, on the other hand, has a distinctly martial character, for which the composer employed no less than 14 trumpets. Grammy-winning baritone Gerald Finley takes the spotlight in the final scene from the Cunning Little Vixen opera, (which Janácek asked to be played at his own funeral), and a cycle of Sibelius’ songs. Rautavaara's orchestration of Sibelius is commissioned by Gothenburg Symphony and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. | Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Thursday 20-Mar-14 07:30pm Beautiful Orchestral Songs Musical imitation of natural sounds is nothing unusual, but Rautavaara took the idea a step further in his best-known work Cantus Arcticus, using recordings of various Finnish birdsongs in place of a soloist in the three-movement concerto. Strauss must have already been in contact with the next world when he wrote his Four Last Songs, their unearthly beauty interpreted here by the lustrous soprano Sabina Cvilak. Mikko Franck brings the proceedings to a dramatic close with Stravinsky’s fanciful Firebird Suite. «Slovenian soprano Sabina Cvilak sings with a freshness and edge that make you sit up», Financial Times | ||

Perhaps it’s only natural, considering his Russian heritage and early apprenticeship with Rostropovitch..The 5 movements of Bernstein’s Serenade are an exquisite evocation of 5 great philosophers expounding on the true nature of love, inspired by Plato’s Symposium.
