|

| Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus), Oslo 0250, Norway Saturday 25-May-13 03:00pm Saraste's farewell as chief conductor This is by no means a farewell concert as Saraste will be returning as guest conductor already in the 2013–2014 season. At the same time, these concerts mark the end of a seven-year engagement with us in Oslo as well as an extremely important chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history. It will be next to impossible to leave the concert hall unmoved when the final chorus of Mahler’s’ symphony no. 2 finishes with “Bereite dich zu leben”. | ||

| Auditorium Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 25-May-13 06:30pm Pictures from Russia Three musical pictures from Russia rich in detail guarantee a unique musical experience with their vibrant tone colours and fascinating virtuosity. Glinka’s sweeping overture serves as a prelude to Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto – one of the most popular of its genre – which is in the able hands of Vadim Gluzman. Michail Jurowski, Guest Music Director of the Tonkünstler, presents a further masterpiece from his home country: the trip through Mussorgsky’s «Pictures at an Exhibition» perfectly rounds off the colourful cycle with a wealth of musical impressions. Taxis, street-sellers, traffic jams and fog; for Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edwardian London was a symphony just waiting to be written, packed with humour, atmosphere and delightfully hummable tunes. Listen for the chimes of Big Ben as Sir Andrew Davis shows us the sights, and then soars high above the English countryside with virtuoso Tasmin Little in 'The Lark Ascending'. Is this the most beautiful piece of British music ever written? Little and Davis introduce another contender: Delius's haunting, rarely-heard Légende. Tickets: £34, £27, £23, £19, £14, £10 | ||

| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Violin Concertos This concert completes our week of Bach as we present all of his violin concertos. There are six of them that feature one, two or three violins as soloists and we have a star-studded cast of musicians to perform them for you. The great American violinist Rachel Barton Pine returns to the Festival as soloist and leader of the ensemble. She’ll be joined by violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch and Timmy Chooi and OSM Principal Oboe Ted Baskin. The ensemble will be made up of the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 competition. A world-class evening in store for you!
The Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been seen on the same stage at the same time, until now.Rachel Barton Pine, Violin Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Marie-Ève Poupart, Violin Matilda Kaul, Violin Boson Mo, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Emily Westell, Violin Marcus Thompson, Viola Lambert Chen, Viola Emmanuel Vukovich, Viola Arnold Choi, Cello Rachel Desoer, Cello Ariel Barnes, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass Theodore Baskin, Oboe

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 25-May-13 08:00pm Robertson leads Ravel and Gershwin Ravel, who heard jazz in Harlem with Gershwin, was dumbfounded by the dazzling Rhapsody in Blue, which Gershwin played at a birthday party for the French composer. When Gershwin asked to study with him, Ravel said "It is better to write good Gershwin than bad Ravel." The jazz-influenced Concerto for the Left Hand was written for a pianist grievously injured during the First World War. The dark undertones of La Valse, an homage to Viennese waltz, suggest a furious farewell to gentility in post-war Europe. Elliott Carter's powerful Variations for Orchestra, another 20th-century masterwork, opens the program. | ||

A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love.

The waiter will serve a Chinese guzheng under the warm light of an alpenhorn lamp, and with the Indian items, you’ll have to blow hard to keep the snakes charmed!
