| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

|
![]() | ||
| Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 11:00am Piano Century: The Year 1913 Two of the pivotal moments in musical history, from exactly a hundred years ago, thrill in radical and revealing couplings. A mysterious alchemy occurs when orchestral scores are heard played on two pianos. Rhythms become tauter, highly sprung, harmonies crystallise, tiny details of the music’s inner workings emerge with new clarity and focus. Debussy and Stravinsky are heard afresh in piano arrangements by the composers. Zimmerman’s work (itself an arrangement of an orchestral score) teases us with fragments from Beethoven and Bach to Boogie-Woogie and quotes directly from Jeux, with which it shares a fluidity, quicksilver changes of direction and almost improvisatory air. The controlled venom, intricate organisation and relentless impetus of Stravinsky’s infamous Rite fi nd a parallel in Boulez’s innovative Structures – precisely and minutely organised but with a momentum, percussive power and glittering brilliance that makes an explosive, visceral impact. There will be a 30-minute interval. | ||

In the words of The Times on Das Rheingold, ‘Farnes has done many fine things at Opera North, but his pacing of this 150-minute sweep of music, his care about balance… and the sumptuousness of the orchestral textures – all this constitutes a massive achievement.’ In the penultimate part of this great tragedy of love and power, the hero Siegfried awakens the warrior maiden Brünnhilde, lying in a deep sleep surrounded by a magic fire, and makes her his wife. | Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 06:00pm Epigrams: Tribute to Elliott Carter The music of Elliott Carter, who died in November, has been, and will remain a constant presence at Aimard’s Aldeburgh Festivals. With Oliver Knussen,
another musician linked so closely with this modern master, he discusses the man and his music and presents glittering chamber music miniatures from
the last two years of his life, including the world premiere of his last ever work, a piano trio intended for Aldeburgh but left incomplete at his death. ‘By turns lyrical, dramatic, complex, amusing and poetic, this grand master of polyphony understood the challenges of his time and entertained us with great intelligence.’ - Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Indeed, because music was so highly appreciated at the Courts, composers were often paid to travel in order to bring back the latest styles and compositions. So it was that during the first half of the eighteenth century many French composers adopted Italian elements in their compositions, and also used the Italian vocabulary to name works and movements. | St Peter's Church, Shaldon, Shaldon, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:30pm Shaldon Festival Choir - Informal Concert Ticket Information: Tickets: £7 Detail: By popular acclaim, we are pleased to welcome back Brian Kay to conduct this year’s Shaldon Festival choral concert. Brian divides his working life between the concert platform and the broadcasting studio. His many presentations for BBC radio have included Brian Kay’s Sunday Morning, Brian Kay’s Light Programme, Three for All, and Choirworks – all for Radio 3 – on Radio 2, the popular programmes Melodies for you and Friday Night is Music Night and for Radio 4, Comparing Notes and Music in Mind. His television appearances have included the competitions to find the Cardiff Singer of the World and the Choir of the Year, and every year since 1996, the New Year’s Day Concert from Vienna. He has twice won a Sony Award as Music Presenter of the Year, including the coveted Gold Award in 1996. Brian is Conductor of the Leith Hill Musical Festival and the Burford Singers. He is Principal Conductor of The Really Big Chorus, with which he regularly conducts massed voices in London's Royal Albert Hall, together with recent concerts in Salzburg, Prague, Venice, Halle, Seville, Cape Town, and Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall. The choir will perform two musical settings of the words from the Gloria by Poulenc and Vivaldi. In the case of Francis Poulenc there is an unmistakable freshness and vivacity, and Antonio Vivaldi’s setting is one of his best known sacred works and a tremendously appealing example of late Baroque sacred music.

| Derby Cathedral, Derby DE1 3DY, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:30pm Monteverdi Vespers - 40th Anniversary Celebration Concert Directed by Malcolm Goldring with period instruments Soloists to include Faye Newton and Philippa Hyde - sopranos Richard Roddis and Glyn Aubrey - tenors Forty years ago the Sitwell Singers and the Derwent Singers performed the Monteverdi Vespers in Derby Cathedral. It was, according to Press reviews, a hugely succcessful venture. We are delighted that once again we are coming together for a very special annyversay performance of this magnificent work - one of the most sumptuous and monumental compositions of the Baroque - which reflects the musical splendours of Venice during this period. | Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm Stravinsky's Russian Roots The joyous Les Noces “depicts” a wedding the way an Altman film uses scraps of conversation to tell a tale, and boasts four pianists on stage. One hundred years ago, Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Stravinsky and Monteux—legends all—triggered the most scandalous evening in ballet history with the premiere of The Rite of Spring. The combination of Stravinsky’s revolutionary music and Nijinsky’s startlingly un-balletic choreography caused a riot. Now universally admired, the music has lost none of its freshness and power. | ||

| Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Concert Hall, 10 Salisburg Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm Trpčeski's Rachmaninov Our cycle of Rachmaninov concertos starring Simon Trpceski reaches its climax in these concerts. The Fourth Concerto was composed in the United States – and includes more than a hint of New York jazz energy. The initial failure of his First Symphony famously scarred its composer for years – but more recently this work has been recognised for its many beautiful Rachmaninov moments. His gothic tone poem The Rock opens the concert in dark and mysterious style. | ||
