| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Friday 14-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

Thomas Adès Darknesse Visible
Britten Quartet No.3 Music from the English Renaissance explodes into fragments in Adès’ solo piano piece illuminating Dowland’s lute song, ‘from the inside’. Memories of the past similarly inspire the ailing Britten’s last chamber work: Venice – a place of deep consolation for him and echoes of the opera Death in Venice merge with, inevitably, the spectre of death itself. The work’s calm resignation and gently rocking finale is a poignant farewell. ‘I wanted the work to end with a question.’, said the composer. | ||

| Chester Town Hall, Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HJ, United Kingdom Friday 14-Jun-13 07:30pm Michelangelo Drawing Blood By Charlie Barber A new chamber opera/performance piece conceived by composer Charlie Barber in collaboration with choreographer Andy Howitt and film maker Barnaby Dicker. Inspired by Michelangelo’s sketchbooks, sonnets and figure studies, this integrated work of music, physical theatre, film and photography uses as a starting point Michelangelo’s own concept of ‘releasing’ a sculpture, and explores the process of creativity and creation. Through a series of a dozen scenes – episodic, real and imagined – the work contrasts Michelangelo’s conception of creativity and divine vision with his own internal struggles. Barber’s music is scored for countertenor voice accompanied by a range of period instruments (theorbo, viola da gamba, recorder, dulcimer and percussion.) Please note the production contains nudity | ||

| Nikolaisaal, Potsdam, Wilhelm-Staab-Straße 10-11, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm Anne Sofie von Otter Ever since the "Swedish nightingale" Jenny Lind captured the hearts of audiences in the period of Chopin and Mendelssohn, extraordinary Scandinavian singers have time and again taken the international stages by storm including legendary Wagner singers such as Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, lyrical tenor Nicolai Gedda or Jussi Björling, "the Swedish Caruso" who Mankell’s opera-loving detective Wallander named his dog after. Anne Sofie von Otter is, in the best possible sense of the word, a modern representative of her art. Critics rightly rave about "one of the most flexible and most natural vocal instruments" among great contemporary voices. Von Otter, Forsberg and Kuusisto create an evening of Scandinavian Lieder-art and chamber music with the piano for once being more than the accompanying instrument and a violin that truly sings enchantingly. Scandinavian teamwork!

| Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Concert Hall, 10 Salisburg Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm Mozart vs Salieri Emperor Joseph II faced a dilemma: he had to decide what style of opera Viennese audiences should be hearing. There were two options: the Italian style, with florid arias and recitatives, or the German style, with spoken dialogue and simpler vocal writing. So he arranged a contest and commissioned two composers to extol each style – they just happened to be Salieri and Mozart. Each created a sparkling work, to be performed at a special competition dinner. Who won? And who should have won? We’ll let you decide at this unique recreation of the original programme. | ||

| Orangery Sanssouci: Raffael Hall, Potsdam, Orangery Sanssouci, Potsdam, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm North of Vienna Beethoven’s intoxicating septet, which fills the Mozart-period serenade with a spirit of compositional innovation, is a major success with audiences and inspires many colleagues. Franz Berwald‘s treatment of the original and experiencing what colouring he derives from the same instrumentation make for an exciting comparison. The Swede whose ancestors had originally come from the "Neumark" lived in Berlin for ten years, not from his music, however, but as an orthopaedic because he never gained the recognition as a musician, which he so richly deserves during his life. His vital stubbornness also impressed the Dane Carl Nielsen who wrote his "serenade in vain" as a witty accompaniment to Beethoven’s piece in a concert. Played like this by the ensemble OXALYS from Brussels, audiences will definitely not turn a deaf ear.
