| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Thursday 13-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

Born in Lancashire, Rachael has based herself in the north of England after completing her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. Rachael realised her deep love of chamber music by forming an Oboe Trio whilst still a student. Besides performances at the Purcell Room in London, they appeared frequently throughout the UK and were active in commissioning new works for the genre by composers including James MacMillan. In recital, she has performed with the pianist, Kathryn Stott. Since 1999, Rachael has held the position of Principal Oboe with Manchester Camerata. During this time, the Camerata have recorded the complete cycle of Beethoven Symphonies to great critical acclaim. In addition, Rachael has been a frequent soloist with the orchestra, performing concertos by Mozart and Albinoni. Last season, Rachael performed the Vaughan Williams Concerto conducted by Douglas Boyd at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Rachael Clegg is very committed to her work in the education field and frequently participates in workshops organised by Manchester Camerata. For 12 years, she has been on the staff of Chethams School of Music where she has a thriving class of young oboists. | Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 13-Jun-13 04:30pm Songs of Amour Song is always beautiful whether with or without words. Tower's vibrant work Rising is a lovely blend of tones and color. Comprised of a string quartet plus flute, this unique ensemble has memories of Dvořák in its resplendent rise. It is joined by one of the last works of the great composer Max Bruch. You'll love hearing three of his set of eight pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano. These instruments exude warmth and splendor, and the three selections are simply gorgeous. The concert takes a turn to the many colors of love when words join the song. Cabaret is a rich tradition in which many classical composers have dabbled. You'll be caught in a romantic swoon and sway to these often jazz-infused melodies.

But while Schumann’s magnifi cent cycle creates a large canvas on which to draw his protagonist’s desires and despair, Britten’s is a miracle of concision where every phrase is potent, every song a fl eeting impression befi tting the ‘fragments’ of the title. Birtwistle’s major new cycle reunites composer, writer David Harsent and lead role from his 2009 Aldeburgh-commissioned opera, The Corridor.

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Thursday 13-Jun-13 07:30pm Sibelius Symphony Cycle: Symphonies 3, 6 & 7 Swirling mists, sunlit forests, and snow-capped summits; with Sibelius, you're never far from nature. Sibelius' Third Symphony sketches a sea-journey with bracing freshness, while his Sixth evokes the Finnish landscape in some of the most serenely beautiful music he ever wrote. And John Storgårds reaches journey's end with the monumental Seventh Symphony; a life's work brought to completion in a single mighty gesture. The symphonies of Jean Sibelius are landmarks of 20th Century music. Rooted in the pride, nature and folklore of his native Finland, Sibelius wrestled personal demons and the turmoil of the twentieth century to forge seven masterpieces that redefined the symphony. With their soaring melodies, passionate emotions and majestic scale, they are as fresh, as powerful and as stirring as the Northern landscape itself. Nearly one hundred years later, they continue to inspire. Join the BBC Philharmonic as our Finnish Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds takes us on his nation's greatest musical journey. This symphony cycle will also be recorded for Chandos Records. Tickets: £34, £27, £23, £19, £14, £10 | ||

| New Chambers Sanssouci: Ovid Gallery, Potsdam, Im Park Sanssouci, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Thursday 13-Jun-13 08:00pm Bach in Swedish Scandinavians have a tendency to fearlessly deal with distinguished repertoire and tear down walls between what in Germany is referred to as "serious" and "entertaining" music. Two clever Swedes have unearthed the great Bach, taken his folksy roots as a "municipal piper" and put them onto a Swedish dance floor – and behold – he has grown roots immediately and is flourishing. And the harmonium can also do a lot more than accompanying sacred music: when it was used as all-round instrument, quite similar to contemporary keyboards, it was at times and not only in Sweden more popular then the piano. Its renaissance in the modern folk scene is more than deserved. "Bach in Swedish" is suitable for both Bach and Swedish beginners and makes perfect sense without using a dictionary: the combination shakes several legs.

| Concertgebouw: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands Thursday 13-Jun-13 08:15pm Memento Mori Heinz Holliger remembers the dead.
‘Remember that we will all die’, is the motto for this programme by and with Heinz Holliger. Ten years after his last appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Swiss hobo player, composer and conductor returns with a programme centred
on death. The orchestra will play three of Holliger’s own works: two adaptations of ominous, late piano works by Liszt and the Dutch premiere of Ardeur noire, his homage to Debussy. Holliger sandwiches his own works between two contrasting paradigms of expressionism. Berg’s Violin Concerto was dedicated to Manon Gropius, who died at a young age, and constitutes Berg’s last finished composition. Finally, the Dutch premiere of Alagoana is performed, a ballet suite by Zimmermann based on an Indian myth of life and death.Tickets €40.50 - 22.50, SJP €36.20 - 30. Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.
