| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 03:00pm Schubert Octet Schubert’s magisterial, perennially popular work sings as warmly and pulses with the same energy as any symphony, but it is typical of the composer that a rich lyricism and predominantly sunny disposition cannot fully mask fleeting shadows – this happy stream of invention runs with deeper, darker undercurrents.
Fluidity of musical thought and choppier waters too in Janáček’s buoyant wind sextet and, opening the programme, a composer in his formative years but
already developing a distinctive style of his own – the seventeen-year old Benjamin Britten.Ensemble 360’s burgeoning reputation is founded on thoughtful but thrillingly immediate performances of large-scale chamber music such as this.

| Leighton House, London, 12 Holland Park Road, London W14 8LZ, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:15pm Leighton's Music The concerts held every year in Leighton’s studio were like a who’s who of mid-nineteenth century music making. There was a real sense of the creative arts reaching across to each other – all in the informal and intimate atmosphere of the studio, with Leighton’s work in progress all around them.
Following his successful recreation of one of Leighton’s “Musics” last summer, musician and broadcaster Sandy Burnett returns to host another absorbing and entertaining evening of music making. It includes Lieder by Lord Leighton’s beloved Schubert, intermezzi by Brahms, one of the magnificent solo cello suites by JS Bach, and possibly the only masterpiece ever written for cello and double bass! - the Duetto by Rossini.
We’re delighted to welcome international soprano Julia Doyle and distinguished cellist David Watkin to Leighton House for this concert – once again the excellent Juliet Edwards joins us at the piano.
Doors open 6.45pm and tickets include refreshment (served during the interval).

![]() | ||
| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:30pm Piano Century: 1913 - 2013 With extracts from Prokofiev Sarcasms; Schoenberg Five Piano Pieces; Kurtág Jatékok; Harrison Birtwistle Harrison’s Clocks; music by Bartók, Cowell, Stockhausen, Carter, Pierre Boulez, Marco Stroppa, Tristan Murail and George Benjamin; and premieres of new commissions from young composers from the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti. Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself. | ||

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 11-Jun-13 08:30pm Desdemona Toni Morrison's response to Othello discusses racism, war and oppression.
Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.

| Chester Town Hall, Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HJ, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital “Guzzo’s technique was immaculate, and his Szymanowski was also stylish and driven. He ripped through the cadenza with terrific verve and left me wanting to hear much more from him”. Andrew Morris, classicalsource Twenty-six year old violinist and leader of Ensemble Deva Giovanni Guzzo is rapidly rising as one of the leading performers of his generation. Born in Venezuela to parents of Italian and Venezuelan heritage, he continues to captivate audiences around the world with his unique and passionate approach to his performances. Following his solo debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London earlier this season, critics described him as a wonderfully “magnetic” and “commanding” performer. Having started his musical studies with the piano at the age of five and violin at the age of six under the teachings of Emil Friedman and Luis Miguel Gonzales, he became the youngest violinist to win 1st prize at the XII National Violin Competition “Juan Bautista Plaza” in Venezuela with only 12 years of age. A keen recitalist and chamber musician, Giovanni has worked closely with some of today’s leading musicians such as Maxim Vengerov, Martha Argerich, Joshua Bell, Martin , Daniel Hope, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Gábor Takács-Nagy, the Maggini and Takacs Quartets, Gerhard Schulz, Mats Lidstrom, Colin Carr, to name but a few. His talent has been recognised with numerous awards including Her Majesty the Queen’s commendation for Excellence, Gold medal at the Marlow Music Festival 2006, HRH Princess Alice’s Prize, PROMIS award given by the London Symphony Orchestra, finalist at the YCAT (Young Concert Artists Trust) competition and the Manoug Parikian and Myra Hess award. Giovanni has performed on several occasions for the Royal Family, most recently performing for Her Majesty the Queen on the famous ‘Viotti ex-Bruce’ Stradivarius violin (one of the most precious Stradivarius violins in the world). He appears regularly in live television and radio broadcasts, most recently on BBC’s Radio 3 performing the Mendelssohn Violin concerto. He was also the youngest musician ever invited to perform a solo recital at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), in front of world leaders and some of today’s most influential personalities. A protégé of the renowned French virtuoso violinist Maurice Hasson, Giovanni was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, from where he graduated with the highest honours. He previously studied with the famous pedagogue Zakhar Bron at the “Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia” in Madrid. Giovanni continues to perform as soloist in some of the most prestigious venues around the world, including the Wigmore hall and Zurich Tonhalle, and is a regular guest at Music Festivals such as the Verbier festival in Switzerland, Schloss Cappenberg and Mecklenburg festivals in Germany He is the leader of the Manchester Camerata Orchestra and principal Guest leader of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Giovanni Guzzo plays on a 1709 Antonio Stradivarius Violin, kindly on extended loan to the Manchester Camerata by Philanthropist Jonathan Moulds; and a bow by T. Baker awarded to him by J&A Beare. £10 | ||
