| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 13-Jun-13 04:30pm Songs of Amour Song is always beautiful whether with or without words. Tower's vibrant work Rising is a lovely blend of tones and color. Comprised of a string quartet plus flute, this unique ensemble has memories of Dvořák in its resplendent rise. It is joined by one of the last works of the great composer Max Bruch. You'll love hearing three of his set of eight pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano. These instruments exude warmth and splendor, and the three selections are simply gorgeous. The concert takes a turn to the many colors of love when words join the song. Cabaret is a rich tradition in which many classical composers have dabbled. You'll be caught in a romantic swoon and sway to these often jazz-infused melodies. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm A Musical Melange This blend of Italian, French, and Russian music with a sprinkling of strings, piano and woodwinds results in a melodic and colorful feast. A pinch of Bach permeates Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work of stark emotional power. Poulenc’s jazzy sextet, described as “very fast and fiery” by the composer himself, is infectiously delectable. The chance to hear the only surviving chamber work by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi is a delicious treat. This magnificent masterpiece will make you wish Verdi had written more instrumental music. And for dessert, enjoy two surprises from the best student ensembles of the week. | ||

| Süreyya Opera House, Istanbul, Eyüp Merkez Mh., Bahariye Cd No:29, Istanbul, Turkey Wednesday 19-Jun-13 08:00pm Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble Winning the hearts and minds of audiences for their idealism as much as for their ravishing music, the Berlin Counterpoint Ensemble will give the world premiere of the festival’s commission to Kamran İnce: “Nasreddin Hodja”, a work which will probably be a most warm-hearted surprise for music lovers. These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent ensemble pianists of our times, Zeynep Özsuca had cooperated with various artists including Magdalena Kožená, Rolando Villazon, Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. In addition to all prominent orchestras in Hungary, French horn player Dániel Molnár also performs in several important orchestras in Europe, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. | St Peter's Church, Shaldon, Shaldon, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:30pm Shaldon Festival Choir - Informal Concert Ticket Information: Tickets: £7 Detail: By popular acclaim, we are pleased to welcome back Brian Kay to conduct this year’s Shaldon Festival choral concert. Brian divides his working life between the concert platform and the broadcasting studio. His many presentations for BBC radio have included Brian Kay’s Sunday Morning, Brian Kay’s Light Programme, Three for All, and Choirworks – all for Radio 3 – on Radio 2, the popular programmes Melodies for you and Friday Night is Music Night and for Radio 4, Comparing Notes and Music in Mind. His television appearances have included the competitions to find the Cardiff Singer of the World and the Choir of the Year, and every year since 1996, the New Year’s Day Concert from Vienna. He has twice won a Sony Award as Music Presenter of the Year, including the coveted Gold Award in 1996. Brian is Conductor of the Leith Hill Musical Festival and the Burford Singers. He is Principal Conductor of The Really Big Chorus, with which he regularly conducts massed voices in London's Royal Albert Hall, together with recent concerts in Salzburg, Prague, Venice, Halle, Seville, Cape Town, and Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall. The choir will perform two musical settings of the words from the Gloria by Poulenc and Vivaldi. In the case of Francis Poulenc there is an unmistakable freshness and vivacity, and Antonio Vivaldi’s setting is one of his best known sacred works and a tremendously appealing example of late Baroque sacred music. | ||

| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Thursday 4-Jul-13 11:00am The Rite of Spring on Two Pianos Described in The Times as ‘precision-tooled piano duettists’, Tong and Hasegawa return to Cheltenham for the visual and sonorous spectacle of two 9 foot Steinways side-by-side in the Pump Room. 100 years since it was first performed by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, Stravinsky’s still-extraordinary and influential The Rite of Spring has a centenary performance in its two-piano version. And in complete contrast will be the delicate concision of Dai Fujikura’s brand-new miniatures, commissioned by Cheltenham and the Tong-Hasegawa duo.
Britten and Poulenc first met in London in 1945, when they were the soloists in Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. They remained good friends until the Frenchman’s death in 1963, Britten writing in 1964 that he ‘was too innocent to be insincere...incapable of being anything but himself - a delightful friend and a lovable musician.’ Fujikura, Dai (b. 1977), Three Miniatures for two pianos (World Première)

Debussy’s Prelude and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe are impressionistic and colourful depictions of mythical landscapes dominated by the seductive melodies of a flute. They are framed by Faure’s serene and elegiac Requiem and Poulenc’s joyful setting of the Gloria.Image credit: London Concert Choir

| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Saturday 13-Jul-13 11:00am Mozart & Beethoven for Piano & Winds The London Conchord Ensemble is a collective of the highest calibre soloists and principals of orchestras such as the BBC Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Performances and recordings since their Wigmore Hall debut a decade ago have been widely praised for their precision, sophistication and spirit. Alongside the pair of classical Viennese works, their programme here features Barber’s wind quintet from the 1950s and Poulenc’s most substantial chamber work, a typically suave, melodic work finished just before the outbreak of World War Two.
Rumbustious and playful, Francis Poulenc is deemed a lesser figure among the greats of 20th-century music but it’s a mistake to underestimate him. His work is no mere froth; there’s a smoky, autumnal sadness to his harmonic writing, a lingering regret beneath the joie de vivre, particularly in the intimacy of his chamber music. The London Conchord Ensemble understand this completely, working their magic in the bittersweet sonatas…and romping through ensemble works large and small.

| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Monday 19-Aug-13 01:00pm Proms Chamber Music 6 More English music at Cadogan Hall as Robin Tritschler sings Peter Warlock’s wistful 1922 setting of poetry by W. B. Yeats, The Curlew, with the London Conchord Ensemble. Written when she was still a student, Imogen Holst’s nostalgic 1928 Phantasy Quartet could almost be mistaken for a work by her teacher, Vaughan Williams. Poulenc’s neo-Classical Sextet for wind and piano dates from the following decade and was premiered in Paris in 1940. Another modern take on a much older style of music comes in Thomas Adès’s richly coloured arrangement of François Couperin’s Les baricades mistérieuses.Tickets £10 - £12. | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 7-Sep-13 07:00pm Munich Philharmonic Orchestra Vive la France! The whole day in Grafenegg is dedicated to French music and joie de vivre. The Prelude will set a cheerful mood with Camille Saint- Saëns’ «Carnival of the Animals». Played by the brothers Kutrowatz and narrated by the legendary entertainer and professionally trained pianist Herbert Feuerstein, both young and old will enjoy this classic. Afterwards, the Munich Philharmonic under Semyion Bychkov will present some of the most famous composers of the Grande Nation on the Wolkenturm: look forward to works by Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc and César Franck. Katia and Marielle Labèque will be adding a very personal French touch. | ||

| Beethoven-Haus, Bonn, Bonn, Germany Monday 9-Sep-13 08:00pm Luxury, peace and pleasure The existential big-city imagery of Charles Baudelaire, characterized by loneliness, has inspired numerous composers, including Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. This recital is devoted to his poems, transformed into musical pictures, to Roger Hanschel’s limpid saxophone sounds, and Oskar Pastior’s cryptic metamorphosis of "Harmonie du soir". A concert that glows like the picture by Henri Matisse, whose title is taken from Baudelaire’s "Les fleurs du mal": "Luxe, calme et volupté" – "Luxury, peace, and pleasure".
"Luxe, calme et volupté - Baudelaire Metamorphoses" Oskar Pastior: "Oh du roher iasmin". Intonations to "Harmonie du soir" by Charles Baudelaire alternating with the "Karmic Episode" für solo saxophone.
