| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 10-Aug-13 08:00pm Australia's Best The Australian Youth Orchestra is the best youth orchestra in its home country and the second young top orchestra guest-performing in Grafenegg this year. And there is someone who looks forward to this visit very much: Brett Dean, our composer in residence 2013, was born in Australia and used to be a member of the orchestra in his youth. The concert unites three continents: the young Australians bring with them the German conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the US American violinist Joshua Bell — the latter was presented with an «Echo Klassik» award for his CD «French Impressions». Australia is also represented in the form of music by Peter Sculthorpe: his concerto «Earth Cry» with optional didgeridoo precedes a work by his fellow countryman Brett Dean. | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Saturday 5-Oct-13 08:00pm Colourful Conclusion In 2013 Daniel Harding is coming to the Rhine with the London Symphony Orchestra for the third time in order to conclude the festival with a furioso programme: Christian Tetzlaff will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with brilliant technique and analytical acuity. This virtuoso piece will be framed by two other Russian works, Mussorgski’s “Night on a Bare Mountain” and Stravinsky’s fantasy-rich music for the ballet “The Firebird”, a pioneering work of the early twentieth century, with which the composer revolutionized ballet music.

| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Tuesday 12-Nov-13 07:30pm Barry Wordsworth conducts Tchaikovsky An essential concert for all lovers of Tchaikovsky’s music, this programme celebrates the many facets of the composer’s style, from elegant poignancy, to unfettered emotion, to dancing good humour. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings was inspired by Mozart, a composer much admired by Tchaikovsky, who said of the Serenade that it was written ‘from inner compulsion. This is a piece from the heart’. The Violin Concerto was not much appreciated during Tchaikovsky’s lifetime, but its vibrant and heartfelt melodies have ensured that the work remains hugely popular with audiences today. The programme concludes with unique arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s glorious Swan Lake, made by the concert’s acclaimed conductor, Barry Wordsworth. | ||
