| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Tuesday 25-Jun-13 08:00pm Carlo Rizzi: Pathetique Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Sixth Symphony are unquestionably two of the composer’s most frequently performed works. In 1889 he conceived the plan to compose a new grand symphony, whose content should remain enigmatic. It was his sixth and last symphony, with a characteristic finale in the form of an Adagio lamentoso. It is not known whether Tchaikovsky already felt his own end approaching, but like his earlier symphonies, the Sixth Symphony does indeed closely reflect his feelings. The First Piano Concerto, which he began to compose in 1874, reflects his view that the concert performance of music was a contest between orchestra and soloist, whom he regarded as equals. Despite its continuing popularity, this concerto has lost none of its power and freshness, especially in the hands of Elisabeth Leonskaja, who is already a living legend.Image credit: (c) Denis Dailleux _ Agence Vu copy | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Friday 30-Aug-13 07:15pm Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The second evening with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under its Music Director Manfred Honeck takes us from Grafenegg to Russia. The young virtuoso Yuja Wang will interpret Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto No. 1. This is preceded by politically explosive material: in «Komarov’s Fall», Brett Dean commemorates the first cosmonaut, who died in space. The Soviet state apparatus risked a man’s life to celebrate Lenin’s anniversary. In an intelligent balancing act, Dmitri Shostakovich often expressed his critical stance vis-à-vis the powers that be in the form of music too, as, for example, in his Symphony No. 5. | ||

On board in 2013 will be the 25-year-old celebrated pianist Yuja Wang, who has already been nominated for two Grammies for the elegance of her brilliant musical talent and who won her first ECHO Klassik in 2011. She will make her festival debut with Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. The autobiographical tone poem "Ein Heldenleben" by Richard Strauss, in which the composer portrays himself and his wife Pauline with irony and musical finesse, concludes the concert.

See for yourself when this outstanding orchestra performs a program that includes Giya Kancheli’s … al Niente, a sonic tapestry of ravishing sounds and silences dedicated to conductor Yuri Temirkanov, as well as Tchaikovsky’s treasured Piano Concerto No. 1 with Denis Kozhukhin and excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov’s nationalistic opera based on two Russian legends. | ||

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 15-May-14 07:30pm Dream Team The Orchestra throws down the challenge. The piano takes centre stage – and Tchaikovsky begins the grandest of all Romantic piano concertos in the grandest possible style. “Both musicians are bursting with fire, and seem joined at the hip” said one critic of the Petrenko / Trpčeski partnership – so imagine the electricity when they perform live, in a concert that opens with Scriabin’s dreamy Reverie and ends with the epic grandeur of Prokofiev’s shattering Sixth Symphony. If, like so many, you’ve been thrilled by Petrenko’s Shostakovich symphonies with the Orchestra, we think you’ll be knocked backwards by this tragic masterpiece from the darkest years of the Stalin era: music whose message never gets any less powerful.Image credit: Mark McNulty | ||
