| King Georges Hall, Blackburn, Blackburn BB2 1AA, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm The Hallé This very special concert, conducted by Cristian Mandeal, will feature the winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award at this year's Leeds International Piano Competition – one of the most prestigious in the world. Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto is a work of great brilliance and virtuosity. Though modelled on the late piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven’s own musical voice is already very much in evidence. The second half of the concert features one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire – Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’. Packed with famous tunes, Dvořák’s best known work combines the folk music and landscapes of America with a yearning nostalgia for the composer’s native Bohemia. A stunning climax to the Blackburn Classics Series. | ||

The composer’s early piano concerto contrasts well with his ‘Eroica’ Symphony, a revolutionary work regarded as a turning point in musical history. | ||

| Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, Oxford OX1 3AZ, United Kingdom Saturday 26-Oct-13 08:00pm Beethoven I Infused with the quintessential qualities of the classical concerto, Beethoven draws upon his Viennese predecessors in his Piano Concerto No. 1. The Haydnesque finale, brimming with infectious energy and humour, paired with the revolutionary weight of Beethoven’s game changing ‘Eroica’ symphony ensure the Beethoven Festival begins with a bang.

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Saturday 5-Apr-14 06:30pm Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam / Jansons The concert finishes at approximately 9pm For the last two years of his life, Anton Bruckner labored over the final movement of his final symphony. He never finished it. The flame of his existence was extinguished even as he leant over the symphony’s incomplete score. But as life was leaving Bruckner, vision and faith were strengthening in him. The performing version of the Ninth Symphony played today is bold and breathtaking – a blazing statement of spiritual optimism in the face of mortality. This was music at the threshold not just of death, but of the upheavals of the twentieth century too.
