Afterwards, the Munich Philharmonic under Semyion Bychkov will present some of the most famous composers of the Grande Nation on the Wolkenturm: look forward to works by Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc and César Franck.

| Fairfield, Croydon, London, Park Ln, Croydon, London CR9 1DG, United Kingdom Wednesday 27-Nov-13 07:30pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - The Great Classics Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin serves as a colourful curtain-raiser to Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a great war-horse of the repertoire and performed tonight by Valerie Tryon. Modelled on Schumann’s Concerto, the work is coloured by Grieg’s interest in Norwegian folk music, and has even survived the Morecambe and Wise comedy sketch featuring ‘Andrew Preview’! The young Christoph König is already Music Director of two major European orchestras and is sure to add his enthusiasm and charisma on stage as he takes the helm to conduct Tchaikovsky’s wonderful Symphony No. 5. | ||

| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Thursday 6-Feb-14 07:30pm Nuits d'Eté When Berlioz encountered a set of poems by his friend Théophile Gautier which told of love passionate, unrequited and lost, his reaction was typically intense. Berlioz immediately set the songs to music – first for soprano with piano, then with orchestra. In the colour, sensuousness and grace of ‘Nuits d’été’, Berlioz “sowed the seeds for the entire musical lyricism of the nineteenth century in the French language”, according to one musicologist. Ryan Wigglesworth also includes Mozart’s most miraculous piano concerto, Ravel’s plangent memorial to lost friends and his own ‘Inventions’. With a pre-concert talk.
