| Royal Albert Hall, London, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AP, United Kingdom Tuesday 3-Sep-13 07:00pm Prom 69 In their second Proms appearance this summer Vasily Petrenko and the Oslo Philharmonic explore the Romantic landscape and Schubertian echoes of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony. Repeatedly revised by the composer during his lifetime, the symphony opens with a radiant sunrise. Last heard playing Brahms with the Signum Quartet (PCM 7), Christian Ihle Hadland joins Petrenko and the orchestra for Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, built on the Mozartian model but already pointing to the bold gestures of the composer’s maturity.Tickets £14 - £57. | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Sunday 8-Sep-13 07:00pm Romantic Solo In 2013 Hélène Grimaud is appearing at two Beethovenfest concerts, the first together with the NDR Symphony Orchestra under Thomas Hengelbrock. With the poetic Piano Concerto by Robert Schumann – one of the best-known works in this genre, for a recording of which Hélène Grimaud received the ECHO Klassik in 2005 – the charismatic artist can put her qualities as a soloist to the test, and pass with flying colours. The music of Schumann the Romantic is juxtaposed with the “Romantic” symphony by Anton Bruckner.

Schubert’s 5 th Symphony is a youthful work written under the inspiration of Mozart- in fact it sounds quite classical, both in content and instrumentation. Bruckner, on the other hand, used a larger orchestra to realize his dramatic conception of a medieval scene, complete with images of a castle, knights and a hunt. A feast for the ears under the direction of the brilliant young maestro, Robin Ticciati. | ||

| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Feb-14 03:00pm Melda performs Chopin With its characteristic Celtic colouring and rugged rhythms, MacCunn’s overture provides an unashamedly lyrical, romantic view of the Scottish landscape. This charming piece, which shows influences of Parry and Stanford, was inspired by lines from a poem by Sir Walter Scott. Lara Melda, who won the BBC Young Musician 2010, will be the soloist in Chopin’s youthful Piano Concerto No 1. The piece is dominated by the brilliant piano part that the performer-composer wrote to showcase his virtuosity. There are singing melodies in abundance and, after a rich, lyrical first movement, the central Romanza is followed by a vivacious rondo. Bruckner’s reputation rests with his symphonies and the ‘Romantic’ has always been one of his most popular. It’s conceived on a grand scale with highly dramatic, expansive outer movements. The work contains wonderful moments of quietness, contrasted by exciting climaxes. The magnificence of the orchestral sound often comes across as mystical, religious and elemental. | Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Thursday 3-Apr-14 07:30pm Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam / Jansons With each of Bruckner’s symphonies came an intensification of his vision – a sharper focusing of his aesthetic ideals and a honing of his orchestral craft. In the Fourth, he really came of age. In the symphony’s glowing first movement is a new-found confidence; in its solemn, statuesque Andante a knowing premonition of loss. Orchestral music doesn’t get more imposing, majestic or powerful than that from the pen of Anton Bruckner, played here in the first of three Bruckner concerts at the Barbican performed by what many consider to be the finest orchestra in the world, the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
