| Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, Oxford OX1 3AZ, United Kingdom Friday 4-Oct-13 07:30pm Philharmonia Orchestra We are delighted to present the Philharmonia with vibrant guest conductor, Andris Nelsons. You may have enjoyed Andris’ rapport with his own orchestra (CBSO) at Music at Oxford in previous seasons - we have no doubt that the same excitement will be on show with the Phiharmonia. Tonight's concert offers two mainstays of the German romantic repertoire, Brahms’ Symphonies 1 and 3. No 1 finds Brahms at his most radiantly inspired and upbeat, whilst No 3 is a symphony of swirling emotions in which every movement ends quietly (audiences at the time were taken completely by surprise). Alongside these major works is the 'St Anthony' Variations, often regarded as Brahms’ first truly symphonic work. Although often viewed as a conservative composer, Brahms's music is always full of surprises. Please do book early for this concert to avoid disappointment. Concert ends: 9.30pm | ||

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Tuesday 29-Oct-13 07:30pm Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig / Chailly / Brahms Cycle Long before he got into his symphonic stride, Brahms attempted to confront his Beethoven-shaped demons through the medium of the piano concerto – the first of which he conceived as the most monumental, original and hard-hitting orchestral achievement since Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It took Brahms a long time to get his concerto just right, but when he did, he delivered a piece of staggering emotional breadth and new-found virtuosity that still thrills and surprises a century and a half later – the perfect foil to the impulsive flow, profound darkness and compelling depth of his heart-on-sleeve Third Symphony.

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 16-Jan-14 07:30pm Beethoven's Emperor ‘Free but happy’ is the motto of Brahms’s Third Symphony, and it begins with all the exhilaration of a summer downpour. What comes next is one of the loveliest journeys in Romantic music, a world of rolling clouds, tender lullabies, and – at the end – a radiant sunset. Vasily Petrenko adores this music, and the Orchestra has been playing it since Brahms’s own lifetime. Let them weave its spell again, and enjoy a real Petrenko rediscovery: Hindemith’s bold and brassy Concert Music is a real showstopper from the Art Deco era. And the connection? A masterpiece that both Hindemith and Brahms knew and loved, Beethoven’s stirring ‘Emperor’ Concerto played by the spirited winner of the 2012 Leeds Piano Competition, Federico Colli. ‘Federico Colli, flamboyant in a scarlet cravat and cummerbund, aspired to high drama, launching the concerto with a thrilling majesty that never let up…’ The Guardian | ||
