| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 1-Nov-08 Haydn 92 - Brahms 1 / Rattle “Since Haydn, a symphony is no longer a simple affair, but a matter of life and death”, Johannes Brahms once noted. But even more awe-inspiring than Haydn’s over one hundred symphonies was Ludwig van Beethoven’s musical legacy. Born in Hamburg in 1833, Brahms heard the “giant marching behind him” and, accordingly, as a young man had his difficulties composing symphonies... Brahms abandoned one plan to contribute to the genre in 1854. In the following twenty years he proved himself with various other kinds of orchestral works. It was only in 1876 – Brahms was already 43 years old! – that he finally found the courage to present his first symphony to the public. And he was greeted with overwhelming success! None other than the conductor Hans von Bülow called Brahms’ symphonic debut “Beethoven’s Tenth”. The combination of Haydn’s Symphony No. 92, which he presented on the occasion of receiving an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791, and Brahms groundbreaking First Symphony, is a concert experience that shouldn’t be missed! | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 8-Nov-08 Brahms PC1 and sym 2/ Vogt - Rattle Johannes Brahms’ path to the symphony was arduous and took a circuitous route. Unsatisfied with his work on a symphony, he discarded it, instead incorporating material from it into his First Piano Concert which premiered in Hanover in 1859. Two years later the composer titled his orchestral work composed of a number of movements Serenade op. 11, out of fear of comparison with one of the greatest symphonists of all time. “Oh God, if one dares to write symphonies after Beethoven, they must be absolutely different!”, Brahms exclaimed. It was only with the overwhelming success of his First Symphony, premiered in November 1876, that Brahms overcame his “symphony scruples” – as Robert Schumann once called them. Just six months later he began working on his Second Symphony. And it came easy to him: after having spent no less than twelve years brooding over his contemplative First Sym-phony, Brahms composed his distinctly cheerful Second within months. Brahms explained the predominantly pastoral character of the Second Symphony with reference to the idyllic at-mosphere he encountered working at the Wörthersee: “so many melodies flying around here that you must be careful not to tread on any...” | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Friday 14-Nov-08 Brahms 3 amd 4/ Rattle “Aimez-vous Brahms?”, the French author Françoise Sagan asked her readers in 1959. Two years later, France and the rest of the world were suddenly hit by a true Brahms fever when the novel was made into a film titled “Goodbye Again”, with Ingrid Bergmann, Yves Montand and Anthony Perkins. Director Anatole Litvak chose a melody from the third movement of Johannes Brahms’ Third Symphony from 1883 as the theme for his cinematic masterpiece. Et voilà: all clichés of Brahms’ music being “chaste” or “academic” vanished into thin air. The broad audience’s attention was drawn to the composer’s extensive work, at the same time opening the world of classical music to people, who had never before set foot inside a concert hall. However, this concert will not only delight classical music novices. The interpretation that the Berliner Philharmoniker and their principle conductor Sir Simon Rattle present of Brahms’ fourth and last symphony – enthusiastically celebrated by the public and press – allows us to relive how Brahms completed his symphonic oeuvre with a brilliant final stroke. | ||
