Showered throughout by a torrential hail of farmyard noises from the gallery, the whole thing ended in uproar with the young conductor, Pierre Monteux, and his musicians fleeing for their lives. Puccini, who was in the Paris audience that night, described it as ‘the creation of a madman.’ Yet Stravinsky claimed that he was merely ‘the vessel through which the Rite passed.’ Opening the concert is Debussy’s no less groundbreaking Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune. ‘From that moment,’ wrote Pierre Boulez, ‘music began to beat with a new pulse’. Chester Cathedral, Chester CH1 2HU, United Kingdom Monday 3-Jun-13 07:30pm Ensemble Deva One of the most evocative and profound song cycles of the last 100 years is performed in the stunning surroundings and acoustic of Chester Cathedral. The most important non-operatic work of the 1940s, this setting of six English poems for tenor, solo horn and string orchestra was completed in 1943. It was the first large-scale work he had written specifically for Peter Pears, and it was also a response to the extraordinary artistry of the horn player Dennis Brain. The solo horn opens the work, adds perfectly imagined atmosphere to the songs, and then, in Pears’s words, “winds the work into stillness”. A setting of English poems on evening and night which, as sleep approaches, hints of the “worm in the rose, the sense of sin in the heart of man”. The amazing Giovanni Guzzo takes his Stradivarius to lead Chester’s very own Ensemble Deva. Allan Clayton has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting and sought after singers of his generation and can currently be seen at the Royal Opera House. Find out more about him here. It has additional resonance chords like the viola d’amore and its flat chevalet allows for playing in chords much like the viola da gamba. Five virtuosic soloists become a fabulous ensemble, make the stories hidden in their old instruments resonate and conjure up worlds of sound in the listener’s ear that make the borders between old and new music miraculously permeable.
