| SJE Arts at St John the Evangelist Church, Oxford, 109A Iffley Road, Oxford OX4 1EH, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Dreams and Illusions Tenor Daniel Norman and pianist Sholto Kynoch present "Dreams and Illusions", a journey through the realms of sleep, fantasy and fear with music ranging from Schubert to Tom Waits via Poulenc, Fauré and Vaughan Williams. Gurney's haunting setting of John Fletcher, Sleep, begins the evening, which also includes Schubert's fiendish Erlkönig. Daniel Norman was a choral scholar at New College, Oxford, moving on to study at the Royal College of Music. Recent performances include Schubert’s songs at the Wigmore Hall, French Song at St John’s Smith Square and the role of Sam Kaplan in Weill’s Street Scenes at the BBC Proms. Sholto Kynoch read music at Worcester College, Oxford before studying at The Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall. He performs solo and in chamber groups and is in demand as a song accompanist. He is Artistic Director of Oxford Lieder. Daniel and Sholto will be touring Columbia with this recital later in May. | ||

| Dorking Halls, Dorking RH4 1SG, United Kingdom Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Dorking Concertgoers Society: Harp Duo Recital by Mélissa Kenny & Tamara Young This concert is a musical journey exploring two contrasting and complementary repertoires: French and Spanish music through the medium of two harps. The first part focuses on French repertoire of the 20th century and Impressionism and includes works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Bernard Andrès. The second part explores Spanish songs, dances and traditional rhythms from Spain as well as South America and includes works by Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados and traditional South American pieces. With this programme we are hoping to allow a wider audience to discover the colours of the harp, an instrument which remains quite unfamiliar in concert halls, playing outside the orchestra. In an intimate chamber music context, we will explore the perhaps less-known fiery and rhythmical possibilities of the two harps and the famous airy and magical feel of the two instruments playing together.Sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Works by Debussy, Claude (1862-1918) Works by Ravel, Maurice (1875-1937) Works by Andres, Bernard (b. 1941) Works by Albéniz, Isaac (1860-1909) Works by Granados, Enrique (1867-1916) | ||

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Robertson leads Ravel and Gershwin Ravel, who heard jazz in Harlem with Gershwin, was dumbfounded by the dazzling Rhapsody in Blue, which Gershwin played at a birthday party for the French composer. When Gershwin asked to study with him, Ravel said "It is better to write good Gershwin than bad Ravel." The jazz-influenced Concerto for the Left Hand was written for a pianist grievously injured during the First World War. The dark undertones of La Valse, an homage to Viennese waltz, suggest a furious farewell to gentility in post-war Europe. Elliott Carter's powerful Variations for Orchestra, another 20th-century masterwork, opens the program. | ||

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm The Hallé Paul Lewis is internationally recognised as one of the leading pianists of his generation. An acclaimed interpreter of the classical repertoire, here he performs Mozart’s exquisite A major concerto. Although clouds occasionally darken the Mozartian sky, the work is largely a sunny affair, particularly its ebullient finale. The concert begins with a new piece by the Hallé’s Associate Composer Helen Grime, while after the interval Sir Mark conducts Mahler’s First Symphony. This remarkable work begins with bird-calls and distant military fanfares before proceeding via a wonderfully rustic Ländler and an evocation of a Jewish funeral to its inspirational, life-affirming conclusion. | ||

| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-May-13 07:30pm The Tallis Scholars - Tallis Scholars at 40: Gesualdo at 400 ‘In this anniversary year of Carlo Gesualdo’s death, it is a pleasure to perform again his astonishing Responsories for Holy Saturday. When our recording of this set first came out in the late ’80s the Gramophone critic wrote: ‘Is this great music or merely weird?’ After many more performances I can say quite clearly that it is both. Gesualdo was unique; and whatever one thinks of his behaviour in life, I am convinced he knew exactly what he was doing with his music. To complement Gesualdo’s chromatic style we have put together a second half of music which has similar features – experimental, chromatic, ahead of its time – ending with that much-loved arch-revolutionary, Monteverdi.’ (Peter Phillips) Part of Cadogan Hall's Choral at Cadogan 2012/13 series. | ||
