Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 22-May-13 07:30pm Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in London Sir Andrew Davis conducts a concert celebrating the exact 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, showcasing the British Wagner tradition and featuring one of the composer’s finest achievements. The Walküren (or Valkyries) of the title are an army of maidens who ride through the air on horseback. We see twin brother and sister, Siegmund and Sieglinde, fall in love, thereby committing both adultery and (unwittingly) incest. The former is subsequently killed by Wotan, although Brünnhilde (Wotan's warrior Valkyrie daughter) saves Sieglinde in the nick of time. The opera reaches a blazing climax during the unforgettable Third Act, when Brünnhilde is punished by Wotan, who surrounds her with a ring of fire that can only be crossed by a fearless hero destined to be none other than Sieglinde's eventual son, Siegfried. This concert also launches Wagner 200, a wideranging, London-based festival to celebrate the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth, featuring events from May to November 2013 in association with leading venues and producers. It is the culmination of a day of activity at Southbank Centre, including pop up open-air performances on the riverside terraces and balconies featuring young singers and performers. The sheer sonorousness of his dark, warm voice is fascinating, and gives substance to all the registers of the performance. His musical command and sensitivity are also remarkable in the most intimist repertoires, such as the romantic Lied, presented here in all its aspects and extremes: the wonder of love with sonnets by Petrarch set to music by Liszt, existential meditation with Wolf’s sober and powerful Michelangelo Lieder, the hallucinatory melancholy which permeates Pfitzner’s melodies, and the sublimation of death by love, which Strauss celebrates like no other. Befreit – ‘liberated’ – is the last Lied in this programme, and O Glück – ‘oh happiness’ – is the last sung word. This is, indeed, what the evening promises. Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Jun-13 07:30pm Chamber Music: Idyllic Elgar Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 no. 1 was written during his early period when he was overflowing with new ideas and eager to infuse his exuberant and bold style into what was the baroque trio sonata. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll in 1870 during what he termed the “happiest year of his life”, and presented three performances of the work as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima on Christmas Day. She wrote ecstatically about her present: “When I woke up I heard a sound, it grew ever louder, I could no longer imagine myself in a dream, music was sounding, and what music”! Similarly, Elgar’s Piano Quintet received equally glowing words from his wife: ”E. writing wonderful new music”. Written in the Elgars’ Sussex cottage where they were seeking an escape from a number of worries in the aftermath of World War 1, passages from Lady Elgar’s diary reveal the apparent programmatic inspiration for the Quintet: “a copse of bare trees, sad and sinister”.
