| Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 3, Amsterdam, Netherlands Thursday 20-Jun-13 08:30pm The Gloaming Early in 2011, by way of experiment, they met for a jamming session in the studio. At the end of that same year, the Irish Times hailed them as the new supergroup of Irish Music. Now, 18 months later, the Gloaming make their Dutch debut at the Holland Festival. Their instant success does not come as such a surprise though when you consider that all members of the band are seasoned recording artists in Irish music, some having worked with such names as Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne and Yoko Ono. With The Gloaming they are breaking new ground, stretching the boundaries of Irish folk music. Their performances are virtuoso yet subtle, powerful yet controlled, with beautiful melodies and, most of all, revelling in the sheer joy of music!

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Friday 21-Jun-13 08:30pm Licht op de langste dag On the longest day of the year, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic take their last bow – with an optimistic gesture. Supported by Visual Kitchen’s video and lighting design, four compositions on the theme of ‘light’ are performed. Two of these are brand new, an emphatic statement by the orchestra to leave something behind for the future. Dutch composer Matijs de Roo, a finalist at last year’s Toonzetters competition, has created a punchy and fast moving orchestral work; the French composer Pascal Dusapin (previously at the festival with Passion and Medea) has written a violin concerto titled Aufgang, which is performed by Renaud Capuçon. The orchestra will also play the sprightly Lumen II by Régis Campo and L’heure bleue by the Japanese composer Misato Mochizuki, a musical interpretation of the ‘blue hour’ of twilight.
Tickets €27.50 - 22.50, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour 45 minutes, one interval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk de Roo, Matijs (b. 1977), New work commissioned by Holland Festival Dusapin, Pascal (b. 1955), Aufgang (commissioned by Westdeutschen Rundfunk, Fondation de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Holland Festival)

Mahler, arrangements of his late romantic songs |
![]() | ||
| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:30pm Mahlerlieder East-Tyrolean outfit Franui make Mahler sound like never before. With their unusual, brass-dominated instrumentation this ‘Musicabanda’ from the village of Innervillgraten developed their unique sound by combining folk with classical music and jazz. Mahler’s late romantic songs undergo a fascinating metamorphosis, taking them back to their folk roots. The songs are interspersed with readings from Robert Walsers Kleine Dichtungen. The result is stunning: songs which through their sparse instrumentation sound heart-wrenchingly poignant, close harmonies of a touching honesty and gentle winds and brass through which the magnificent musical genius of the master resounds. A must for anyone who loves Mahler, and for those who weren’t aware of it yet.
Tickets €25 - 20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour 30 minutes, no interval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911), arrangements of his late romantic songs

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Monday 24-Jun-13 08:30pm Brooklyn Babylon - Big band music from the heart of Brooklyn, New York At the dawn of the 20th century, Brooklyn is being targeted by real estate developers with plans to build the world’s highest tower right in the centre of the New York borough. When master carpenter Lev is commissioned to construct a carrousel to crown the skyscraper, he finds himself torn between his ambition and his loyalty to the community.
Brooklyn Babylon is an urban fable which unfolds wordlessly. The performance combines the haunting animations and live painting by graphic and comic artist Danijel Zezelj with the exciting, cosmopolitan polyphony of Secret Society, an 18-piece bigband led by Darcy James Argue – regarded as one of the great North American jazz musicians of the new generation.
Tickets €25 - 20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour, no interval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk

‘What do young girls dream of? Of the knife and of blood.’ This quote from the French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet serves as the starting point for Heiner Goebbels’ latest piece in music theatre. Goebbels has created a collage of texts and music to explore the development of children into adults.
Forty girls and young women from the world famous Vocal Theatre Carmina Slovenica aged between 10 and 20 constantly sway between childish innocence and the unpredictability of adolescence. Switching from medieval to folk works and contemporary music, they portray with unbelievable energy and great musical precision this fascinating and forbidding realm in which the old is no more and the new is still out of reach.Co-production between Steirischer Herbst, Maribor Theater Festival, Festival Borstnikovo srečanje in Maribor 2012 European Capital of Culture , Festival d’Automne à Paris, Grand Theatre, Luxemburg, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussel, Holland Festival, KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen.
