When our recording of this set first came out in the late ’80s the Gramophone critic wrote: ‘Is this great music or merely weird?’ After many more performances I can say quite clearly that it is both. Gesualdo was unique; and whatever one thinks of his behaviour in life, I am convinced he knew exactly what he was doing with his music. To complement Gesualdo’s chromatic style we have put together a second half of music which has similar features – experimental, chromatic, ahead of its time – ending with that much-loved arch-revolutionary, Monteverdi.’ (Peter Phillips) Part of Cadogan Hall's Choral at Cadogan 2012/13 series. | ||

| Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 11:00am Piano Century: The Year 1913 Two of the pivotal moments in musical history, from exactly a hundred years ago, thrill in radical and revealing couplings. A mysterious alchemy occurs when orchestral scores are heard played on two pianos. Rhythms become tauter, highly sprung, harmonies crystallise, tiny details of the music’s inner workings emerge with new clarity and focus. Debussy and Stravinsky are heard afresh in piano arrangements by the composers. Zimmerman’s work (itself an arrangement of an orchestral score) teases us with fragments from Beethoven and Bach to Boogie-Woogie and quotes directly from Jeux, with which it shares a fluidity, quicksilver changes of direction and almost improvisatory air. The controlled venom, intricate organisation and relentless impetus of Stravinsky’s infamous Rite fi nd a parallel in Boulez’s innovative Structures – precisely and minutely organised but with a momentum, percussive power and glittering brilliance that makes an explosive, visceral impact. There will be a 30-minute interval. | ||

| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Monday 22-Jul-13 01:00pm Proms Chamber Music 2 Continuing the exploration of Polish music in this year’s Proms, Paul Van Nevel and the Flemish singers and instrumentalists of the Huelgas Ensemble explore the little-known choral music of 15th- and 16th-century Poland. Motets by Polish composers Mikołaj Zieleński and Krzysztof Klabon are contrasted with works by Christoph Demantius and Johannes Wanning in a programme of intriguing polyphonic discoveries from the archives of the University Library of Warsaw that includes the earliest surviving setting of a Polish text: ‘Chwała tobie, Gospodzinie’ (Praise to Thee, O Lord).Tickets £10 - £12. | Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2EA, United Kingdom Wednesday 28-Aug-13 08:00pm Ensemble musikFabrik A concert of blazing energy, infectious rhythms and big sounds as Cologne-based contemporary music group Ensemble musikFabrik celebrates the sometimes outrageous music of US maverick Frank Zappa. Led from the drumkit by superstar percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, the ensemble explores connections between Zappa’s wild creations, from the vibrant funk of Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing? to the atmospheric t’Mershi Duween, and the classical music that he so admired. Ensemble musikFabrik also performs the remarkable Ionisation for 13 percussionists by Zappa’s lifelong hero Edgard Varèse, a celebration of the sounds of modern city life. John Cage’s classic Credo in Us, written in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, supplements the percussion ensemble with turntable and radioreceiver. Image credit: Klaus Rudolph | ||
