Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 03:00pm Schubert Octet Schubert’s magisterial, perennially popular work sings as warmly and pulses with the same energy as any symphony, but it is typical of the composer that a rich lyricism and predominantly sunny disposition cannot fully mask fleeting shadows – this happy stream of invention runs with deeper, darker undercurrents. Fluidity of musical thought and choppier waters too in Janáček’s buoyant wind sextet and, opening the programme, a composer in his formative years but already developing a distinctive style of his own – the seventeen-year old Benjamin Britten. Ensemble 360’s burgeoning reputation is founded on thoughtful but thrillingly immediate performances of large-scale chamber music such as this. There was a real sense of the creative arts reaching across to each other – all in the informal and intimate atmosphere of the studio, with Leighton’s work in progress all around them. Following his successful recreation of one of Leighton’s “Musics” last summer, musician and broadcaster Sandy Burnett returns to host another absorbing and entertaining evening of music making. It includes Lieder by Lord Leighton’s beloved Schubert, intermezzi by Brahms, one of the magnificent solo cello suites by JS Bach, and possibly the only masterpiece ever written for cello and double bass! - the Duetto by Rossini. We’re delighted to welcome international soprano Julia Doyle and distinguished cellist David Watkin to Leighton House for this concert – once again the excellent Juliet Edwards joins us at the piano.
