| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Thursday 30-May-13 07:30pm Danse Concertantes “I feel certain it shall please” wrote Mozart upon finishing his Paris symphony after a series of frustrating false-starts in France. The new symphony did just that, brimming with an effervescence, hope and freshness that tuned directly in to the city’s love for the bold and gregarious. Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky and Prokofiev all lived in Paris after Mozart, their music never losing that elegance, élan and energy which its citizens so adore. | ||

![]() | ||
| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Thursday 6-Jun-13 07:30pm Celebrity Cello: Steven Isserlis Two pieces from Steven’s programme reflect a private project whereby he generously added to the cello repertoire through commissioning four composer friends to make arrangements of
works with which he has a close personal association: Richard Tognetti’s transcription of Ravel’s ‘Two Hebrew Melodies’, and Christopher Palmer’s version of Bloch’s ‘From Jewish Life’, which Steven described as “as touching as anything written for the cello”. On the instrument itself, Steven captures its essence in a few words: “the cello is what people play in romantic novels, it’s closest to the human voice”. That Saint-Saens’ music is borne of such lyric quality may surprise many, but as Steven points out, “Saint-Saens taught Faure, who taught Ravel, and the more you know about Saint-Saens, the more you love him. He was an astronomer who designed his own telescope, he produced a book about philosophy, he was an animal rights campaigner, he wrote plays and poems and was a wonderful organist. He had a fantastic melodic gift”. With Bach’s ‘Gamba Sonata no. 2’ to start the programme, it promises to be an evening to remember. | ||

The 100-strong choir, accompanied by the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra and soloists, will perform this magnificent and often over-looked work.
