| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 7-Jun-13 08:00pm Move to the Music Dance and music make perfect bedfellows, and while none of this program's pieces have been choreographed, they all find inspiration in dance forms. Playful with a hint of the ironic, Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik is only "little" in name. Its dance-like rhythms include a fun waltz and a melody worthy of imbibing at Oktoberfest. We usually hear Rachmaninoff's Morceaux de salon for piano, but this set of dance forms is perfect for chamber instruments. An early work, Dvořák's Sextet is replete with folk idioms and dances from his native Czechoslovakia that are a whirlwind of virtuosity. Chamber pieces performed by three of the best student ensembles of the week are sure to move you. | ||

The Fourth Concerto was composed in the United States – and includes more than a hint of New York jazz energy. The initial failure of his First Symphony famously scarred its composer for years – but more recently this work has been recognised for its many beautiful Rachmaninov moments. His gothic tone poem The Rock opens the concert in dark and mysterious style. | ||

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Monday 24-Jun-13 07:30pm Corinthian Chamber Orchestra Concert Not quite a night at the movies, but this American-inspired programme borrows much from Hollywood and Broadway. Bernstein's ever-popular Symphonic Dances - so much more than a medley of music from his hit show, West Side Story - is mirrored with Rachmaninov’s autobiographical work of the same name. The two are separated by Korngold’s Violin Concerto, which marked his return to mainstream composing from his highly successful career as a film composer during the Second World War. Buried in the music are themes from many of his fabulous film scores, including The Prince and the Pauper and Another Dawn. | ||

![]() | ||
| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Friday 12-Jul-13 11:00am Boris Giltburg While 'the Waltz' provides a tantalising sub-theme to this programme, linking the glittering virtuosity of Rachmaninov's early work to Ravel's and Liszt's own dizzying showpieces and the opening waltz of Schubert's Papillons (a suite of miniatures intended to represent a masked ball), the waltz in the third movement of Prokofiev's energetic Sonata belies a darker, military theme. One of what are often nicknamed Prokofiev's 'War Sonatas', scattering arpeggios and the striking of a fist on the keys evoke gunshots and explosions before giving way to a beautiful, yet interrupted and fragmented Allegretto. A concert of darkness and light, executed with Giltburg's trademark sensitivity and verve. | ||
