| Konzerthaus: Rolf Böhme Saal, Freiburg, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1, 79098 Freiburg, Germany Monday 3-Jun-13 08:00pm Freiburger Barockorchester: The first FBO concert from 1987 After two years practicing and rehearsing, sometimes alongside their own courses of study, the time finally came: a young, enthusiastic crowd of musicians presented themselves in Burgheim Church in Lahr for the first time in a concert under the name Freiburg Baroque Orchestra on 8 November 1987. On the programme then (and today) a kaleidoscope of European Baroque music: the start of a major success story. True to the democratic self-image of the newly founded orchestra, the individual pieces were directed at the time by a variety of concert masters and concert mistresses from within the band’s own ranks. This will be the case again at this concert at the end of the FBO jubilee season. How will it sound when the same orchestra plays a “historical encore” after 25 years?

| Chester Cathedral, Chester CH1 2HU, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:30pm International Artist Concert British conductor Duncan Ward is emerging as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. In 2013 he is Music Director of the critically-acclaimed charity Streetwise Opera’s 10thanniversary production and was recently appointed on the recommendation of Sir Simon Rattle as Conducting Scholar at the Berlin Philharmonic. After winning several grand prizes in her native Korea, Jackie Jaekyung Yoo has enjoyed further success in international competitions and has appeared as soloist with orchestras and performed numerous solo recitals across Europe. She performs Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 1, one of the composer’s most popular works, with a wealth of uplifting tunes, frequent, provocative changes of mood and a wonderfully high-spirited last movement. As on the previous night, two Haydn symphonies complete the programme, including ‘La poule’, which derives its nickname from the ‘clucking’ second subject of its first movement. | Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Saturday 15-Jun-13 11:00am Quatuor Mosaïques I Quatuor Mosaïques is the world’s leading period instrument string quartet. Their gut-stringed instruments and uncluttered, perceptive musicianship lead to freshly considered and deeply satisfying performances of the classical and early Romantic repertoire. In the first of their two weekend residency concerts, they pitch us straight into baroque music and the wonderful improvisatory air of Purcell’s Fantasias for viol consort as a prelude to the richness of mature Haydn. Schubert’s monumental final quartet finds solace amidst the tumult, as the ailing but still young composer obsesses on an extraordinary torrent of musical ideas – chamber music on an epic scale. | ||

According to John Bridcut, in his superb new ‘pocket guide’ Essential Britten (Faber), the middle movement ‘contains the most utterly beautiful – and fascinating – sounds That Britten ever wrote.’ Partnering this is another late work, one of Beethoven’s final pieces, and part of an extraordinary chamber music canon which the Elias Quartet are exploring comprehensively in the coming years. | ||
