| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-May-13 07:30pm International Piano Series: Steven Osborne An opportunity to hear Steven Osborne's critically acclaimed performance of Messiaen's passionately spiritual meditations Vingt Regards sur L'enfant Jesus. Osborne's recording of this great piano work for Hyperion earned an ecstatic reception, with critics celebrating its 'towering authority and technical achievement' (Gramophone), as well as described it as 'outstanding' (The Independent) and 'awe-inspiring' (The Sunday Times). A brilliant summation of Messiaen's mystical and highly-influential compositional style, Vingt Regards sur L'enfant Jesus is a cycle of 20 pieces reflecting the ecstatic and radiant nature of the composer's own profound faith. The work makes immense technical demands upon its performer, who must create on the piano sonorities resembling an organ or a full orchestra, and whose intellectual grasp of Messiaen's mathematical rhythms must be as secure as his speed, accuracy and versatility. 'Osborne's revelatory performance is a blinding tour de force of interpretive and pianistic incandescence.' (Classic FM Magazine). | ||

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:30pm Piano Century: 1913 - 2013 With extracts from Prokofiev Sarcasms; Schoenberg Five Piano Pieces; Kurtág Jatékok; Harrison Birtwistle Harrison’s Clocks; music by Bartók, Cowell, Stockhausen, Carter, Pierre Boulez, Marco Stroppa, Tristan Murail and George Benjamin; and premieres of new commissions from young composers from the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti. Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself. | ||

Aimard has been widely praised for his visionary performances of Messiaen’s radiant piano music. Tonight he evokes the birds, animals, fl owers and landscape of the remarkable La Rousserolle Effarvatte (‘The Reed Warbler’), an avian portrait that charts a whole day in the French countryside through birdsong and the sounds of nature. In his Kontakte (‘Contacts’), Stockhausen harnessed early electronic technology in a thrilling exploration of rhythm, sound and space, pitting electronics against piano against percussion and sending music spinning through space.

componist meester in was.

Messaien’s Eclairs sur l’au-delà or ‘Illuminations on the Beyond’ scored for vast orchestral forces, was his final completed work. Months before his death he spoke of its inspiration: ‘I imagined myself in front of a curtain, in darkness, apprehensive about what lay beyond: Resurrection, Eternity, the other life.’ Tickets £10 - 32.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Thursday 3-Apr-14 08:15pm Calefax Rietkwintet + Nederlands Kamerkoor - Far from Home Introduction at 19:15
In Far from home klinkt
