| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Monday 10-Jun-13 07:30pm Sandrine Piau One of today’s most sought-after sopranos makes her Aldeburgh recital debut in an eye-catching programme. A great communicator who works on the
opera and concert hall stage, her reputation has been founded on superb characterful performances of baroque and classical music. Here however she
allies her sharp-edged clarity and easy unaffected warmth to nocturnal songs from the German Romantic tradition (the young Mendelssohn and Richard
Strauss). These are blended with an intoxicating selection of music from the turbulent decades that straddle the turn of the twentieth century. There is a thrilling potency to every footstep, every new departure taken by the young Berg, Schoenberg and Debussy. By contrast the cool detachment of Bitten’s idiosyncratic folk song arrangements seem to heighten the emotional directness of deeply-rooted opular songs from England, Scotland and the USA.

| New Garden: Palm Hall, Potsdam, Am neuen Garten, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Tuesday 18-Jun-13 08:00pm Meeting in Leipzig In 1843 Hans Christian Andersen wrote in a letter to a German friend: "My friend the composer Gade went to Leipzig and composes with Mendelssohn who loves him dearly." As for many Scandinavian composers, Leipzig became a starting point for the Dane from where he began a successful career. The young talent from the North inspired Mendelssohn and his concert audience so Gade was hired for the newly founded academy of music and Mendelssohn also made him 2nd conductor at the prestigious Gewandhaus. Yet in 1847 Gade had to attend the funeral of his friend and patron. The Stockholm-based DAHLKVIST QUARTET contrasts Mendelssohn’s quartet in F minor with a late piece by Gade adds the latest piece by the Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi, which is inspired by Swedish and Hungarian folk music, as an exciting contemporary counterpoint.

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm A Celebratory Finale Making his Festival debut, conductor Nicholas McGegan’s infectious joy will transport you into these three vibrant pieces. Handel’s masterpiece is among the most popular Baroque works. You’ll enjoy its stately elegance and effusive cheer. Mozart himself described his Concerto No. 16 as music “to make the performer sweat.” As one of America’s preeminent performers of Mozart’s music, Robert Levin is the ultimate pianist to truly showcase this great work. Our Festival season ends in stormy Scotland, with a robust symphony by Mendelssohn. Inspired by the landscape and ruins of Scotland, this is a work justifiably beloved by generations and an impressive finale for the 49th Sarasota Music Festival. | ||

| Sanssouci Palace: Court of Honour, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Sunday 23-Jun-13 09:00pm Scandinavian Last Night This week midsummer night is celebrated everywhere in the North and each country has its very own customs. In Denmark and Norway the summer solstice festivities were connected to John the Baptist’s saint’s day, so celebrations commence tonight into "St. Hans Eve". Lighting huge bonfires to scare away evil spirits is always an important part, then there is the traditional "fire speech", which takes a satirical look at day-to-day affairs. In Denmark they even place a straw witch on top of the fire and send her back to Mount Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany – German craftsmen are reported to have brought this custom to the country a long time ago. A night of miracles and legends – perfect for entering musical fairy-tale worlds where Shakespeare’s elves, Nordic trolls and characters from Arabian nights gather …

![]() | ||
| Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, Nottingham NG1 5ND, United Kingdom Friday 28-Jun-13 07:30pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra The matchless combination of Andris Nelsons and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra provides all the elements for an astounding concert. And as it takes place at the end of June it’s appropriate to begin with Mendelssohn’s sun-drenched ‘Italian’ Symphony. A ten month tour of Italy in 1830 left him with an overwhelming impression of the ‘land of nature, delighting every heart,’ and inspired him to write his most effervescent symphony three years later.
One of the most moving stories of Beethoven is that one of the soloists at the premiere of his 9th Symphony in 1824 had to turn the deaf composer around so that he could witness the tumultuous applause. Few there could have doubted its seismic status. Visionary in scope, extreme in its gestures and technically daunting (horn players still have cold sweats about one notorious solo), it’s a piece which tears at the boundaries of the classical symphony, nowhere more so than in the choral finale that proclaims the words of Schiller’s Ode to Joy.Image credit: Andris Nelsons with the CBSO © Neil Pugh
