| Sanssouci Palace: Court of Honour, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Sunday 23-Jun-13 09:00pm Scandinavian Last Night This week midsummer night is celebrated everywhere in the North and each country has its very own customs. In Denmark and Norway the summer solstice festivities were connected to John the Baptist’s saint’s day, so celebrations commence tonight into "St. Hans Eve". Lighting huge bonfires to scare away evil spirits is always an important part, then there is the traditional "fire speech", which takes a satirical look at day-to-day affairs. In Denmark they even place a straw witch on top of the fire and send her back to Mount Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany – German craftsmen are reported to have brought this custom to the country a long time ago. A night of miracles and legends – perfect for entering musical fairy-tale worlds where Shakespeare’s elves, Nordic trolls and characters from Arabian nights gather …

| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Friday 31-Jan-14 07:30pm Bruch Violin Concerto On 22nd July 1919 an audience sat quietly in front of Pablo Picasso’s drop-curtain at London’s Alhambra theatre, waiting for the first sounds of Manuel de Falla’s new ballet the ‘Three Cornered Hat’. Picasso’s colourful images got them in the mood for the sensuous sounds of Falla’s music – its intoxicating rhythms, bold colours and vivid descriptions of Iberian life. Also performed here is Falla’s darker, more intimate and supernatural score ‘El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician)’, the perfect foil to Bruch’s beauteous and gregarious Violin Concerto. With a post-concert ‘Northern Sinfonia Spotlight’. Buses from Alnwick and Hexham. Tickets: £10-£29 | ||

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 13-Feb-14 07:30pm Valentine's Classics This Valentine’s Day, give your special someone a treat they’ll never forget: a romantic break for two, as maestro Jaime Martin and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra sweep you to Spain. Eyes flash and passions rise; you can almost feel the warmth of the sun and smell the scent of orange blossom in Chabrier’s España and Bizet’s Carmen Suite.
Guitarist Miloš Karadaglić – making his first Liverpool appearance – whispers sweet nothings in Rodrigo’s tender Fantasía para un Gentilhombre. And then we turn the temperature right up with Falla’s sultry Three Cornered Hat and classical music’s last word in slow-burn seduction: Ravel’s Boléro. It should be a spectacular climax to an unforgettable day in the sun – and all without leaving Hope Street!
‘Karadaglić found a daring simplicity of delivery… a sleight of hand that makes Karadaglić not only a magician, but a serious and accomplished
musician.’

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Sunday 16-Mar-14 02:30pm Classical Symphony Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony goes off like a rocket. And that’s exactly what you’d expect from Christian Lindberg – Sweden’s most flamboyant conductor, composer, trombone virtuoso and all-round musical show -stopper. It’s a dazzling start to a concert that ends with Dvořák’s much-loved New World Symphony. And even though we all know that it’s so much more than the Hovis ad, just wait and see what happens when Lindberg’s electrical energy meets Dvořák’s glorious tunes. First, though – can a trombone really sing flamenco? When the trombonist is Christian Lindberg and the music is Falla’s El Amor Brujo, the answer is a resounding ‘¡Sí!’ | ||
