| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm The Hallé Paul Lewis is internationally recognised as one of the leading pianists of his generation. An acclaimed interpreter of the classical repertoire, here he performs Mozart’s exquisite A major concerto. Although clouds occasionally darken the Mozartian sky, the work is largely a sunny affair, particularly its ebullient finale. The concert begins with a new piece by the Hallé’s Associate Composer Helen Grime, while after the interval Sir Mark conducts Mahler’s First Symphony. This remarkable work begins with bird-calls and distant military fanfares before proceeding via a wonderfully rustic Ländler and an evocation of a Jewish funeral to its inspirational, life-affirming conclusion. | ||

| Oslo Concert Hall (Konserthus), Oslo 0250, Norway Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm Saraste's farewell as chief conductor This is by no means a farewell concert as Saraste will be returning as guest conductor already in the 2013–2014 season. At the same time, these concerts mark the end of a seven-year engagement with us in Oslo as well as an extremely important chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history. It will be next to impossible to leave the concert hall unmoved when the final chorus of Mahler’s’ symphony no. 2 finishes with “Bereite dich zu leben”. | ||

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-May-13 07:30pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: Mozart and Mahler Elegant and emotive music from two of Vienna's finest composers.
Mozart's Third Violin Concerto was written when he was only 19. It is full of youthful charm, with a slow movement of tender romance. The final rondo features a lively dance-tune associated with Strasbourg, from which the concerto gets its nickname, 'Strasbourg'.
Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which opens with jingling sleigh-bells, is one of his most delicate. Yet there is all the contrast you'd expect from Mahler - a quirky scherzo, and a slow movement of yearning beauty. The symphony ends with a soprano solo unfolding a child's vision of Heaven.Image credit: Robert Taylor

This grand work, composed at a tumultuous time in the composer’s life, is sad yet triumphant and features two “night music” movements. Though a demanding piece both technically and musically, this monumental symphony is extremely gratifying for the musicians and audience alike. Mahler, arrangements of his late romantic songs |
![]() | ||
| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:30pm Mahlerlieder East-Tyrolean outfit Franui make Mahler sound like never before. With their unusual, brass-dominated instrumentation this ‘Musicabanda’ from the village of Innervillgraten developed their unique sound by combining folk with classical music and jazz. Mahler’s late romantic songs undergo a fascinating metamorphosis, taking them back to their folk roots. The songs are interspersed with readings from Robert Walsers Kleine Dichtungen. The result is stunning: songs which through their sparse instrumentation sound heart-wrenchingly poignant, close harmonies of a touching honesty and gentle winds and brass through which the magnificent musical genius of the master resounds. A must for anyone who loves Mahler, and for those who weren’t aware of it yet.
Tickets €25 - 20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour 30 minutes, no interval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911), arrangements of his late romantic songs

| St David's Hall, Cardiff, Cardiff CF10 2DP, United Kingdom Friday 28-Jun-13 07:30pm BBC National Orchestra of Wales - Mahler's Fifth Symphony Mahler's Fifth Symphony is an all - embracing darkness to light experience, from its sombre opening through struggle, strife, stillness and hectic exhilaration to its tremendous apotheosis. At its still centre is the Adagietto featured in the film Death in Venice. In Huw Watkins's dramatic Violin Concerto, premiered at the 2010 BBC Proms, Alina Ibragimova who gave the premiere joins forces once again with Thomas Søndergård. | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 6-Jul-13 08:00pm "Wien, Nur du Allein" Naturally, there is no place like Grafenegg for lovers of music. But we will readily admit that Vienna also has its charms. Reason enough for a musical homage. You can look forward to a melange of Viennese stories served by Georg Breinschmid, Aleksey Igudesman and Sebastian Gürtler in the Prelude. In the evening concert the Tonkünstler Orchestra under the direction of David Afkham invite you to join them on a trip to the metropolis on the Danube. The renowned opera singer and acknowledged Lied specialist Christopher Maltman will debut in Grafenegg with Mahler’s «Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen». Before and after Mahler’s songs, works by two other Viennese composers are on the programme: Webern’s late Romantic idyll «Im Sommerwind» and Schubert’s opus magnum, his Symphony No. 8, the one with the «heavenly long-drawn-out passages». | ||

Previously unheard at the Proms, the blistered, metallic timbres and subtle textures of Lachenmann’s ‘musique concrète instrumentale’ unsettle and transfix, creating an abrasive yet alluring sound-world ideally suited to the Ardittis and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Written over the summers of 1901 and 1902, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony concludes the programme, its famous Adagietto a love-letter to the composer’s wife, Alma.Tickets £7.50 - £36.
