From the keyboard he performs and directs Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto. Dedicated to a mysterious muse figure called Delphina Potocka, it is a passionate work with an exquisite slow movement and a vigorous mazurka finale. Three superb French pieces make up the rest of the programme: Fauré’s touching Pelléas et Mélisande Suite (with its famous and exquisite Sicilienne), Ravel’s elegiac yet elegant Pavane pour une infant défunte and finally Bizet’s Symphony in C, a work bursting with youthful exuberance and sheer joie de vivre.

Hafiz’s poetry inspired Goethe to create the ‘West-Östlicher Divan’ – a collection of love poems, epigrams and drinking songs. Goethe’s verses in turn inspired composers such as Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn, while poems of Hafiz were set to music by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. Join us as we explore Europe’s century-long love affair with the Orient through poetry, painting and song. Ravel, Maurice (1875-1937), Shéhérazade (excerpts)

His elegance, refinement and pianistic style are legendary and we are proud to be able to offer him in concert for a second evening. His chosen repertoire will be French as he touches three of France’s greatest composers: Ravel, Debussy and Fauré.
In this program, Collard is joined by Denis Brott for a performance of Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano written in 1915. Violinist Giora Schmidt and Collard present Ravel’s famous Tzigane and the concert closes with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s astonishingly beautiful and unmistakably French Quartet in C minor for Piano and Strings.

![]() | ||
| Charlton House, London, Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital - Soprano and Piano Soprano Cheryl Coutinho was born in Poole, England and is of Goan/Portuguese extraction. She recently finished studying for her master’s degree in vocal performance at Trinity College of Music where she was awarded a Gladys Bratton and TCM Trust Scholarship. Cheryl studies voice with Paula Anglin.
Ms. Coutinho performed as Kay Amin, the wife of president Amin in scenes of a new opera, The Last King of Scotland by Stephen McNeff. This was performed at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Studio Theatre, Covent Garden in February 2012.
Cheryl has also toured in Switzerland where she performed a new work by composer Duncan Ward for soprano and brass in concert with the Meridian Brass Ensemble. This particular collaboration has also taken place at the Royal Festival Hall South Bank and at the PAW Festival in Swanage. Other concert performances include El Amor Brujo with conductor Jonathan Tilbrook and the Nottingham Orchestra; A Night of Spanish Song with the Iberian Quintet at the Peacock Theatre; and as a soloist in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony.
Very much at home in the operatic repertoire, Cheryl’s dramatic performances include Mimì (La bohème), First Lady (The Magic Flute), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Casilda (The Gondoliers), the Countess (The Marriage of Figaro) and Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw – Trinity Opera Scenes).
Last year, Cheryl was a semi-finalist in the Trinity College of Music Soloist Competition and this year was a finalist in Trinity’s French Song Competition. Other competitions she has taken part in include Bournemouth Music Festival Competition, New Milton Music Festival Competition and Bournemouth Evening Echo National Competition.
Ms. Coutinho has sung in many master classes with artists such as Simon Keenlyside, Rosalind Plowright, Jonathan Peter Kenny, and Rita Susovsky. She is also a member of the Trinity College of Music Mentor Scheme at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House and has had the opportunity to shadow many rehearsals and music calls with Willard White, Roberto Alagna and Nina Stemme, among others.
Ffinian Jones began learning the piano at the age of eight and his natural ability soon became evident. He was invited to study performance, composition and history at the Staffordshire Musical Society for talented musicians, and by the age of 15 had already been awarded ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in the piano, cello and alto saxophone. He went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. A year later Ffinian was successful in gaining a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied piano with Murray McLachlan. After his sixth form studies at Chetham’s, he entered Trinity College of Music in London as an undergraduate to study with Philip Fowke, and from September 2009 to January 2010 studied at the Conservatoire National et Superior de Music et Dance de Lyon, France, with Florrent Boffard as part of the Erasmus scheme.
Throughout his career he has participated in many master-classes given by distinguished musicians including Leslie Howard, Anton Kuerti, Phillipe Cassard, Noriko Ogawa, Alexander Ardakov, Mikhail Kazakevich, Deniz Gelenbe, and Douglas Finch. He was also invited to play Ronald Stevenson’s Peter Grimes Fantasy to the composer, who was himself a personal friend of Benjamin Britten.
Ffinian is a keen chamber musician and has formed a long standing duo with Soprano Cheryl Coutinho. The duo focuses mainly on the French and German repertoire and give regular concerts across the UK.
Ffinian's many competition successes include being finalist in the 2008 Il Circolo Competition, winner of the 2010 Trinity College John Ireland Competition, and soloist in Messiaen’s La Ville d’en Haut, held at Blackheath Halls, 2008. Recent appearances have included a performance of Graham Fitkin’s Sciosophy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a solo recital at St. Martin in the Fields, and a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.11, K413 with the Gibbs quartet in Greenwich, London. He was also invited to contribute to a discussion on Liszt in a live interview on BBC Radio 3. He is currently working as a freelance pianist Liszt, Franz (1811-1886), Années de Pèlerinage, Troisième Année: Les jeux d'eaux à la villa d'Este, S 163 no. 4 Price type: Free

![]() | ||
| Flagey: Studio 4, Brussels, Place Saint-Croix / Heilig Kruisplein, 1050 Brussels, Belgium Friday 14-Jun-13 08:15pm Alain Altinoglu: Boléro After his brilliant debut at La Monnaie in Cendrillon, Alain Altinoglu continues to browse through the French repertoire. Like some of Ernest Chausson’s other compositions, his only symphony, composed in 1889, is an undervalued gem. It confirms Chausson’s key position in the evolution of French symphonic music: building on the legacy of Franck and Wagner, he pointed the way forward to the burgeoning impressionism in music. Several years later Fauré composed music for Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande, from which he distilled a concert suite that is his symphonic masterpiece. The big hit by Ravel that is also on the programme was equally inspired by the performing arts. In 1927 Ida Rubinstein asked him to write the music for a ballet. Ravel based his composition on the bolero, because of the melodic simplicity and repetitive rhythm of this Spanish dance. It is no exaggeration to say that this Boléro immediately found its way onto the concert platform and has stayed there ever since.Image credit: (c) Gilles Larvor _ Agence Vu | ||

| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Friday 5-Jul-13 11:00am Schumann, Fauré and the Matthews Brothers Alongside Schumann’s beloved chamber work, the Schubert Ensemble presents a less widely-performed piano quartet by Fauré. The Adagio’s beautifully elegiac quality hints at the turbulence of the 30-something Fauré’s love life at this time, but elsewhere it is kaleidoscopically fresh and ardent.
Bookended by these two substantial romantic piano quartets are two new pieces by the Matthews brothers, Colin and David, their music making a welcome return to Cheltenham after a decade. Matthews, Colin (b. 1946), Nowhere to hide (World Première) Matthews, David (b. 1943), Piano work

Debussy’s Prelude and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe are impressionistic and colourful depictions of mythical landscapes dominated by the seductive melodies of a flute. They are framed by Faure’s serene and elegiac Requiem and Poulenc’s joyful setting of the Gloria.Image credit: London Concert Choir
