|
![]() | ||
| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 20-Dec-13 07:30pm Wagner's Prelude to Tristan and Isolde Celebrated American soprano Christine Brewer is a very special guest for this sumptuous evening of Wagner, Strauss and composers of the Second Viennese school, conducted by the Edward Gardner of English National Opera. Tristan and Isolde and the Wesendonck- Lieder belong to the same turbulent period of Wagner’s life, when he was amorously involved with Mathilde Wesendonck. His settings of her poetry share the same heady chromaticism and ecstatic heights as Tristan, and find an echo in Strauss’s lavish tone poem Death and Transfiguration. Webern’s masterly Passacaglia anticipates the exquisitely-heard, Expressionist world of Berg’s Seven Early Songs. Tickets £10 - 32. | ||

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 11-Jan-14 08:15pm Marc-André Hamelin ‘Gewoonweg formidabel’, schreef The Boston Globe over Marc-André Hamelin.

| Sage: Hall Two, Gateshead, Hill Gate, Gateshead, United Kingdom Saturday 10-May-14 08:00pm Brahms Clarinet Quintet When Johannes Brahms heard the beautiful strains of Richard Mühlfeld’s clarinet, he claimed the Meiningen musician “the best wind player I know”. Brahms came out of retirement to write for Mühlfeld, creating one of his most profound, intimate and strangely coloured works the Clarinet Quintet. Here the Quintet’s fragile emotions meet the singing strength of Alban Berg’s ‘Lyric Suite’ and the charming, open-air directness of Carl Nielsen’s bracing Wind Quintet. Tickets: £16 | ||

Jansons leads his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Brahms’s pastoral Second symphony and Ligeti’s Atmosphères, evoking a sense of timelessness in a web of dense sound textures and tonality. The orchestra is also joined by Gil Shaham for Berg’s Violin Concerto, which combines tonal style with 12-tone technique to examine life, death, and transfiguration. | ||

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Thursday 5-Jun-14 07:30pm Haitink at 85: Beethoven Pastoral Symphony Between the insistence and upheaval of his Fifth and Seventh Symphonies came Beethoven’s Sixth. Gone were tub-thumping argument and strident protest, in their place was a strange and wonderful radiance. The Sixth feels like a sudden step into daylight – into the softened world of the countryside, its quiet exaltation and its strengthening sense of communion. In 2011 Isabelle Faust won a Gramophone Award for her recording of Alban Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, a eulogy for the passing of a child. She plays the same piece here, after Bernard Haitink explores Schumann’s orchestral tribute to Byron’s enigmatic Romantic spirit Manfred. Tickets: £15-65 | ||
