| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 27-Jun-13 07:30pm The Birmingham Beethoven Cycle: Symphonies 8 & 9 It’s been an incredible journey, and on this night Andris Nelsons, the CBSO and our world-class Chorus arrive at Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: the summit of any Beethoven cycle - and some say, the whole of classical music. But there’s a world of experience to live through before the CBSO get to that final, transcendent Ode To Joy, and Beethoven’s explosive little Eighth Symphony launches a concert that’s sure to be one of the most talked-about events in Birmingham this year. | Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, Nottingham NG1 5ND, United Kingdom Friday 28-Jun-13 07:30pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra The matchless combination of Andris Nelsons and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra provides all the elements for an astounding concert. And as it takes place at the end of June it’s appropriate to begin with Mendelssohn’s sun-drenched ‘Italian’ Symphony. A ten month tour of Italy in 1830 left him with an overwhelming impression of the ‘land of nature, delighting every heart,’ and inspired him to write his most effervescent symphony three years later.
One of the most moving stories of Beethoven is that one of the soloists at the premiere of his 9th Symphony in 1824 had to turn the deaf composer around so that he could witness the tumultuous applause. Few there could have doubted its seismic status. Visionary in scope, extreme in its gestures and technically daunting (horn players still have cold sweats about one notorious solo), it’s a piece which tears at the boundaries of the classical symphony, nowhere more so than in the choral finale that proclaims the words of Schiller’s Ode to Joy.Image credit: Andris Nelsons with the CBSO © Neil Pugh

| Regent Hall, London, 275 Oxford Street, London W1C 2DJ, United Kingdom Friday 9-Aug-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Piano Recital Born in Mexico in 1991, Bruno Ferrari began piano studies at the age of 6 as a means of physical therapy for an arm injury... Following a swift recovery, studies continued at the Conservatoire de Montpellier, the Conservatorio Musicale Luigi Boccherini di Lucca, and in Freiburg, Germany under the instruction of Florian Heilmann. Subsequently, academic endeavours brought him to the oldest co-educational boarding school in California, The Thacher School.
After graduating at 17, he devoted himself exclusively to music under the guidance of Val Underwood and Edward Francis. During the subsequent year, Bruno won the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic Concerto Competition, where he appeared as soloist performing the Grieg Concerto. He was also awarded 3rd Prize at the California International Young Artists Competition, and placed 2nd at the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition.
In 2009, Bruno began his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Professor Sulamita Aronovsky. Since then, he won the 2nd Prize in the Moray Piano Competition and was awarded the Douglas Cameron Prize at the Royal Academy of Music. Amongst other recent achievements, in 2011 Bruno won 1st Prize at the Brest International Piano Competition in France.
He has performed in the UK at Bolivar Hall, Queen Charlotte Hall for the inauguration of the Kew Music Festival, and at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, as well as internationally at venues such as the Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Le Chateau de Kergroadez in France and recently a most successful recital tour of Mexico where he performed at several prestigious venues including the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Durango, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Sinaloa and also to an audience of 20,000 at the Explanada del Angel, Chihuahua.
Following his engagement with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, he was also invited to perform Rachmaninov Concerto No.2 in France with the Orchestre Entre Sable et Ciel. His recent engagements include an enthusiastically received recital for the Mexican Week at the London School of Economics.Price type: Free

![]() | ||
| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Tuesday 24-Sep-13 08:00pm Magnum Opus In the third concert of the residency of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Piano Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg, completed in Los Angeles in 1942, meets Beethoven’s magnum opus, his Ninth Symphony. The political link between the two works is obvious: the Ninth is a masterpiece with a variable reception history, and, not least during the Second World War, was misused for political purposes. Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto addresses the theme of the composer’s situation as an exile. Musically the colourful and expressive work is an example of how twelve-tone music need not be over-intellectual. It does though need high-calibre and intelligent performers: the young French pianist David Fray is precisely the man for the job.

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Sunday 29-Sep-13 08:00pm Revolutionary Strength At last: in 2013 the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the "orchestra in residence" at the Beethovenfest Bonn, will take on Beethoven’s only opera, "Fidelio". With its characteristic dynamic and inspiring musical performance, the ensemble will give this opera of rescue and liberation speed and strength, a strength that Beethoven took from the models of revolutionary France. Guiding them on this journey will be their artistic director Paavo Järvi. See a fantastic ensemble composed of the currently most sought-after musicians perform on stage.
