![]() | ||
| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Jun-13 07:30pm Chamber Music: Idyllic Elgar Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 no. 1 was written during his early period when he was overflowing with new ideas and eager to infuse his exuberant and bold style into what was the baroque trio sonata. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll in 1870 during what he termed the “happiest year of his life”, and presented three performances of the work as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima on Christmas Day. She wrote ecstatically about her present: “When I woke up I heard a sound, it grew ever louder, I could no longer imagine myself in a dream, music was sounding, and what music”! Similarly, Elgar’s Piano Quintet received equally glowing words from his wife: ”E. writing wonderful new music”. Written in the Elgars’ Sussex cottage where they were seeking an escape from a number of worries in the aftermath of World War 1, passages from Lady Elgar’s diary reveal the apparent programmatic inspiration for the Quintet: “a copse of bare trees, sad and sinister”. Wagner was first and foremost an opera composer, and his works are usually very large in scope. Bjarni Thor Kristinsson has performed on the operatic stage abroad for a number of years, often appearing in works by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. It is an opportunity worth waiting for to hear this star lend his deep, resonant voice to Wagner’s music.

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 21-Jun-13 08:00pm Fall in Love Love in all its forms and complexity is the subject of this concert. You’ll fall in love all over again with Mozart through his mischievous string quintet, suffused with a blend of cheer and vigor with deeper, more serious emotions. Wagner offered perhaps the most romantic gift of all time in his Siegfried Idyll, a tender birthday present given to his wife on Christmas morning. Intimate and cozy, this work’s soft beauty is compelling.Harbison turns to familial love in Songs America Loves to Sing. Instrumental versions of beloved songs from his childhood - and yours - are woven together into a complex counterpoint that is sometimes melancholy, sometimes witty, sometimes impish but always poignant. You’ll also fall in love with two of the best student ensembles of the week. In the words of The Times on Das Rheingold, ‘Farnes has done many fine things at Opera North, but his pacing of this 150-minute sweep of music, his care about balance… and the sumptuousness of the orchestral textures – all this constitutes a massive achievement.’ In the penultimate part of this great tragedy of love and power, the hero Siegfried awakens the warrior maiden Brünnhilde, lying in a deep sleep surrounded by a magic fire, and makes her his wife.
