| St George's, Hanover Square, London, London W1A 6WN, United Kingdom Wednesday 23-May-12 07:30pm Celebrating England's finest: A concert to mark Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee We open our Diamond Jubilee Celebrations with a work by St George's very own parishioner, George Frideri Handel. His wonderful and spirited "Music for the Royal Fireworks" was commissioned in 1749 by King George II. Vaughan Williams sketched the Lark Ascending at the outbreak of the First World War and it has since become one of the most evocative works for violin of the Twentieth Century. One of the best known pieces of the orchestral repertoire has to be Jupiter from The Planets by Holst. From his triumphant and patriotic music we relax into one of the most pastoral of English composers, Frederick Delius, before rounding off the first half with Walton's Crown Imperial March, first performed at the Coronation of King George the Sixth. Britten's Lachrymae, inspired by the viola virtuoso William Primrose, opens the second half, and we finish with the piece that shot Elgar to international fame and recognition, the sensational Enigma Variations. | ||

Vaughan Williams’ ‘Wasps’ overture provides a fizzing opening and his romantic and gentle fifth symphony concludes the evening. "An ebullient and invaluable disc, Ireland enthusiasts will rejoice." | Martin-Luther-Church, Gütersloh, 33330 Gütersloh, Germany Wednesday 20-Jun-12 08:00pm EXULTATE DEO, Concert for choir and organ Hans-Ulrich Henning founded the choir in 1979 together with pupils of the Christophorus School in Versmold. Key competency in the arts lies at the centre of the schools educational system. The choir, with six hours of rehearsals, professional vocal training and frequent week-long choir camps, enjoys exceptionally good opportunities for development. Thus, it is not surprising that the choir has won numerous first prizes in national and international competitions, amongst them the Grand Prix in Olomouc / Czech Republic in 1993. Its numerous choral partnerships feature bilateral projects, like for example the German-Latvian performance of “Miserere” by G. Donizetti in Riga Cathedral. The choir has cooperated with WDR (West German Broadcasting Corporation) for many years, e.g. with the world premiere of a choral jazz piece, and frequently participates in its Christmas concerts. Three times the choir was finalist in the German Choral Competition. In 1997 it represented Germany at the first International Youth Choir Festival in the cultural capital Thessaloniki. In 2001 the choir was awarded the highly remunerative "Bruno-Kleine-Grant" for exemplary and lasting youth work. In 2002, within the framework of the AMJ (Working Group for Music and the Young) project "Composers compose for children's and youth choirs", it gave the world premiere of a piece by the Munich composer Max Beckschäfer. In 2004 the choir gave a guest performance in Kaunas in Lithuania as the only amateur ensemble at the "IX Pazaislio Muzikos Festivalis". In 2006 the choir was chosen for the "The 6th International Youth Chamber-Choir-Meeting Usedom". In 2007 the choir represented Germany in Aberdeen, Scotland, at the world-largest Youth Culture Festival "WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL OF ARTS". 2009 represented the choir North Rhine-Westphalia during the German Festival "Schools Make Music" in Hamburg. | Grass Roots Court Theatre, Tring, Tring HP23 5QY, United Kingdom Friday 13-Jul-12 07:30pm Tring Chamber Music -'Elgar and Shakespeare's Kingdom' This concert features the glowing voice of soprano, Lorna Anderson, in songs inspired by the bard of Avon. After some instrumental Schubert we naturally gravitate to the Lied ( ‘An Sylvia’) tracing a path through Brahms ( Ophelia Songs), Elgar ( ‘When Shakespeare came to London’), to Mervyn Horder’s delightful ‘ Under the Greenwood Tree’ - a setting of Shakespeare to a tango rhythm. The English flavour of the evening allows us to include Vaughan Williams’ songs for voice and violin. The great Piano Quintet of Elgar is his most expansive chamber work, one with a hidden narrative involving some mysterious pine trees embodying the souls of Spanish Monks. | Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Sunday 15-Jul-12 11:00am M72 Songs of the Exotic For centuries Westerners have had their imagination stirred by the lure of the East and the exotic, no more so than the British. This programme is not so much a true depiction of the East, as an idealised Western postcard of what the East was like through British eyes.
Beginning in England, a boat ride to Bengal sees our intrepid travellers’ first taste of the East. During the interval the boat docks in south-east Asia. A tour of China and Japan ensues before the long journey back to their ‘own country’.

| Cheltenham Town Hall, Cheltenham GL50 1QA, United Kingdom Sunday 15-Jul-12 05:00pm M74 A London Marathon - Finale Concert So if the idea of marathon feels a bit daunting, think of this concert instead as a banquet of London’s musical riches laid before you. The word Cockaigne’s origins are all about gluttony and plenty, but Elgar’s portrait fluently evokes multiple characters of London, from cockney street-cries and church bells to Salvation Army bands.
Westminster chimes also feature in Vaughan Williams’ extended homage to the capital, premiered in the same venue (Queen’s Hall) as Cockaigne, the Ireland, and Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto. The main theme of Ireland’s London Overture engagingly mimics a bus conductor’s call for Piccadilly Circus, while Holst’s Hammersmith combines the bustling of street markets with an altogether darker, superbly atmospheric portrait of the Thames.
