A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love. | ||

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Thursday 6-Jun-13 07:30pm Sibelius Symphony Cycle: Symphonies 1 & 5 Preview 6.30pmStorgårds discusses the upcoming Sibelius cycle. We begin where Sibelius did, with the romantic First Symphony: big tunes, big feelings and sweeping drama, set amidst the twilight colours of Finnish legend. Fifteen years later, and the skies have cleared. Sibelius' magnificent Fifth Symphony opens with a glowing sunrise and ends with a vision inspired by a flight of swans and one of the simplest and greatest melodies ever written. Once heard, never forgotten. The symphonies of Jean Sibelius are landmarks of 20th Century music. Rooted in the pride, nature and folklore of his native Finland, Sibelius wrestled personal demons and the turmoil of the twentieth century to forge seven masterpieces that redefined the symphony. With their soaring melodies, passionate emotions and majestic scale, they are as fresh, as powerful and as stirring as the Northern landscape itself. Nearly one hundred years later, they continue to inspire. Join the BBC Philharmonic as our Finnish Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds takes us on his nation's greatest musical journey. This symphony cycle will also be recorded for Chandos Records. Tickets: £34, £27, £23, £19, £14, £10 | ||

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 07:30pm Sibelius Symphony Cycle: Symphonies 4 & 2 Jean Sibelius was a man of extremes, in fact some would say that his darkest symphony is also his greatest. The Fourth Symphony stares into the bleakest corners of the human soul and finds a surprising strength. The Second could hardly be more different. From playful beginning to triumphant finish, there's never been a more inspiring musical portrait of a nation awakening to freedom than Sibelius' most popular symphony. The symphonies of Jean Sibelius are landmarks of 20th Century music. | Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Jun-13 07:30pm Flowers and Fables Sibelius took the classical symphony and charged it with the freshness and energy of nature itself. Lutoslawski, meanwhile, launched brilliant musical fireworks into the grey skies of postwar Poland. Edward Gardner loves them both, and he begins and ends this concert with two of the twentieth century’s most original – and inspiring – symphonies. In between, something magical happens, as soprano Lucy Crowe re-tells Sibelius’s primal northern myth - and proves that Lutoslawski’s enchanted nursery rhymes aren’t just for children. (£10-£42) | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Friday 13-Sep-13 08:00pm Composer, Trombonist and Conductor Composer, trombonist and conductor – the Swedish musician Christian Lindberg has an exceptional talent. Together with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, he will show that the musical understanding and penetration of the works can be enriched by this threefold perspective. Wagner himself, in his capacity as composer, librettist, stage director and conductor, created “total works of art” whose aesthetic is admired to this day. This evening we shall hear the Prelude to the “Meistersinger” and Kundry’s moving aria “Ich sah das Kind”, sung here by Dagmar Pecková, who is famous for her devilishly expressive voice.
